Really worried about my balding cat

My cat is 10. I've had her for 2 years. She was a rescue with no real history.
She is quite a stressed cat - doesn't really like people until she is hungry. She sometimes asks for strokes but then bites and scratches with no warning (I'm scarred from her many attacks).
Now she is balding from her back half mostly. I first noticed it maybe 2.5 weeks ago. It has been quite rapid.
She is well. Eating as much a usual (she likes a LOT of food!). She isn't scratching at all. The fur she is losing isn't being dropped around the house or anything (she doesn't usually moult much and there isn't any extra noticeable hair about the place). She is up to date with flea and worming treatments prescribed by the vet.
I'm at a loss as to why this has happened so have made a vet appt. It isn't until next Monday however. Can anyone offer any advice in the meanwhile?

We do have a 9 month old kitten also by the way - both cats female. They don't get on particualry but will live along side each other. Have had the kitten since last June so not a new introduction or anything.... so I can't see that she is stressed over the other cat particulalry. Her behaviour didn't alter when the other cat came along.

Ive added some pictures. Balding is to both rear quarters, back legs and a patch on her side. The first pic is 8 days ago. Other two pics are from today.

(Thought I'd posted this was in the litter tray earlier but it somehow ended up in pets. Sorry for the double post but I am worrying).

Is she over grooming?

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/01/2020 18:47

She’s a very pretty girl! Take her to the vets, she’s lost loads of fur there.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 16/01/2020 18:48

No, in fact now I think about it, probably the opposite. I barely see her grooming 🤔.

my old girl went through a phase of this - bald as a coot from halfway along her back. she looked horrendous. it coincided with a barley harvest in the fields at the bottom of the garden - we think she had some sort of allergic reaction. she’s always been a funny old stick tho, so who knows.

my rescue boy occasionally over-grooms his britches.

so, to sum up, my advice is: cats are weird. pop her along to the vet. try a feliway plug in as well, they can work wonders for stressed kitties.

Fluffballs · 16/01/2020 18:55

Oh bless, I agree vets. And maybe its stress related over grooming in secret or at night? No real advice sorry.

exWifebeginsAgainat46 · 16/01/2020 18:56

(also, if there’s a new-ish kitten, it might be a bit of a delayed stress reaction. and a cat can swallow a LOT of fur while you’re not looking)

Wolfiefan · 16/01/2020 18:57

Is there an actual bald spot in there? Can you see the skin?

ThisMustBeMyDream · 16/01/2020 18:59

When I first got her I tried a feliway diffuser for 3 months - no effect at all. She is definitely an unhappy cat that I suspect was taken as a kitten far too soon given her behaviours. I've been told it's unfixable and she will always be this way Sad.
We recently used pet rescue also, about 3 months ago to see if that gave any effect. It didn't...
Her vet appt is monday, I just wondered if anyone had any possible avenues this might take.

if she missed her socialisation window as a kitten, it might well be the new addition that’s causing her some stress. my rescue boy was mistreated as a little, and he’s very sensitive to change. he was with me in a house with 3 other cats and never really settled - happy enough but was a total loner. now it’s just me and him he’s come out of his shell completely, but only with me, and he’s very attached to me. if i go out, he shouts at me a LOT when i come home!

cats are a law unto themselves. i hope the vet can help.

slipperywhensparticus · 16/01/2020 19:04

Sounds like stress they give them a type of antidepressant

If its flea dermatitis it's an anti itch injection and flea bomb the house with my old cat it only took one flea bite for him to RIP his fur off

oh, and in the spirit of a Cat Thread, here he is.

Thyroid issues can cause hair loss.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 20/01/2020 12:41

Took her to the Vet this morning, who felt it was stress related (over-grooming). He said she was breaking the hairs rather than pulling them out Sad.

Not much I can do other than try and figure out if there is something new stressing her (given she already gas behavioural issues). Vet said to bring her back if she has any new symptoms.

Thanks for helping me over the weekend whilst I was worried.

Did they not suggest any meds?. Our vet offered ours amitryptiline if he didn’t stop getting stressed and having urine infections.

theweebleshavelanded · 20/01/2020 20:23

ours went like this. In the end we found by trial and error he`s allergic to certain laundry liquid!! he sleeps on the bed. I changed detergent and since then no bald patches.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 20/01/2020 21:54

No, just sufgested feliway and pet remedy which I have used previously with no effect. I am going to try the pet remedy again as I still have some, so it is worth a go I guess.

Is pet remedy the same as zylkene

ThisMustBeMyDream · 29/04/2020 02:28

So I've resurrected my thread as my poor cat is more than half bald now. I really don't know how to help her. Obviously I can't take her back to the vet - and the vet didn't offer any solutions anyway.
I still don't see her overgrooming. She isn't much of a wanderer, so I see her plenty in the day. She sleeps on my bed all night through. Pet resuce and feliway did nothing.

Any ideas? Anyone?

Thyroid issues?
Mine is an over groomer and we worked our way through various meds. He's had piriton and Valium Hmm (I asked if it was meant for me or him) and nothing worked until he had a steroid jab. He gets one every 8-12 weeks now which keeps it at bay. I physically see him doing it though and when it's bad he vomits hair too

I would be ringing the vet though, that's a lot of hair loss and it doesn't "look" to me like over grooming. Mine will groom until he bleeds but he goes patchy and scabby, that almost looks like it's thinned/dropped out. Would be asking for bloods at the least as something isn't right
