How to stop cat scratching sofa?

Dcat keeps using the sofa to stretch with. She’s ruined one of them and it looks awful :( she has a scratch post but I think it’s too small now? I put the scratch post in front of the sofa but makes no difference!

Help... I would like a new sofa at some point. Lol

You need to get a scratching post that is tall enough for her to stretch up against and rip. If it's too small, she won't use it

I have this one from pets at home

@BovaryX is right. Funnily enough a lot of the scratch posts out there are not tall or sturdy enough. It's need to be tall enough and sturdy/though enough to stay when they're scratching. Place it next to where he's scratching. Putting catnip on it might encourage him.

But it's also good to have other scratchposts dotted about too.

Reward the cat when he uses it

We also have horizontal scratchers

We had a huge mirror with a leather surround. I hated it. When we moved, it was propped against the wall for a while and was about 5 foot tall. Lord Cat started ripping the sides while watching himself in the mirror. He was in ecstasy. And so was I because after he had destroyed it, I chucked it out Grin Then I got a tall, sturdy scratching post....

Our sofas are old, so not a complete disaster if they got damaged. We bought some 4inch wide double-sided sticky tape from Amazon and applied that to the tempting parts.

We kept getting our socks/jeans stuck to it but it did work to a certain extent.

Probably not something to try on leather sofas.

It is also worth investing in nail clippers then the cat can't do too much damage if they are tempted anyway.

We used that scratch post for ours too he loved it. I bet zoo plus or amazon does tall posts too.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 15/01/2020 14:07

Zooplus does horizontal cardboard ones, SnoreCat prefers that. I’ve got it next to the sofa.

I think once they’ve started it’s hard to get them to stop because of the scents. Maybe use a sprayer on the scratched bits with something your cat doesn’t like the smell of?

Our male cat has a little hack at the sofa when he approaches DH to put the laser light on.

He sits like Bast and if DH isn't quick enough to act , the sofa gets hurt

And they have a scratch post/high tower but like the stair carpet too Hmm
