Does your cat meow?

furrytoebean · 10/01/2020 11:44

I have three cats, all are VERY vocal but none of them make a noise I would classify as a meow.

Cat 1 makes a honking noise like a goose and it's usually to tell you to stroke him or a general hello.

Cat 2 makes a high pitched eeeeeeeh noise that sounds a bit like a babies cry and it's to get you to follow her around the house and offer her things while she turns her nose up at them.

Cat 3 trills and purrps and makes a noise that sounds like kkaaaaakoooooow and it's usually because she wants to play or be brushed.

Do your cats meow?

Esther chirrups and growls (when she sees birds through the window). She also does this announcing herself thing when she jumps on someone's lap (it sounds like "wow").

Monty yaps, but then he thinks he's a dog. A Jack Russell, specifically.

Squigean · 11/01/2020 00:00

Yes, only to enquire where I am though. He chirrups when his slave I must make a fuss of him.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 11/01/2020 00:17

My two miaow quite a lot...idiotcat is very demanding...he miaows to attract our attention to the fact that he wants something, even though he is not sure himself what that actual thing is.

food?
cuddles?
attention?
conversation?
my seat?
in?
out?
door open?

He also purps if he wants to be aggravating, he has a snorty huff ..very judgey and damning and usually aimed at me for moving him out of my seat.
He makes the most adorable lion grunt, you hear it on those David Attenborough shows, it comes right from inside their giant kitty lion souls and idiotcat does it too, scaled down to his size

His sister mostly just shouts about the house to see who is in and who is not, she doesn't like it if she cannot find someone and will keep on until whoever (cat, dog or human) she is missing turns up, or she is given a satisfactory explanation as to their actual whereabouts.
Her miaow is a perfect miaow, but will crescendo to a demanding shouty huffy "haarrroooooooooooowwwwwwwww" which is really close to a sarcastic teen type "hellloooooo" if she is not greeted enthusiastically

They are both very loud at purring, and like to dribble as well.

My first cat was very conversational and would join in with a chat, he made all sorts of noises and would watch whoever was talking and was very sociable. The second cat we had at the same time barely made a sound except for purring.

ClientListQueen · 11/01/2020 00:43

@whatdoyouthinkyouknow mine is a rescue. He also appears to have some Siamese Hmm (fast bonding, and never, ever shuts up)
If I ignore him he goes and screams at himself in the mirror

unbaffled · 11/01/2020 00:54

Mine have been a variety. One never meowed in her life, she would go 'wah...ha'.

Current one yowls at the top of her voice in the middle of the night. Driving us crazy. It isn't a meow though, it is an indescribable din Grin

Itslookinglikeabeautifulday · 11/01/2020 01:04

Boy cat is very vocal - miaows continuously whenever I let him in, and very loudly too, as I’d he’s telling me off “About time! I’ve been outside for flipping ages. Where have you been?” Etc etc, while heading straight to the food bowl to then complain “not those sodding biscuits again - where’s the wet food?” He also purrs prolifically - and you only have to talk to him for him to erupt into rapturous purrs, while having a purry/miaowing chat with you. Also makes these funny little grunts and cute grunty sighs when stretching in his sleep.

Girl cat is very quiet, though far more vocal once boy cat is out - probably because she’s miaowing for the cat treats (which I always give in and give her because she is such a lovely little lady) She is beautiful so I always think she should have a very sweet miaow but it’s quite coarse.

Oh, and both of them growl if someone knocks on the door - very territorial.

whatdoyouthinkyouknow · 11/01/2020 03:04

@ClientListQueen yup, our does that too. I think they are confused as they almost recognise their reflection. They say Siamese cats are the third monkey.

SpoonBlender · 11/01/2020 04:33

Our older girl meows. MEOWS, more accurately. With two syllables and everything, at about 90 decibels.
The other two make meep mip mep noises, which is insanely cute (also lovely and quiet!)

squeekums · 11/01/2020 05:24

My current cat bubbles meows, especially at meal time lol

A cat i used to have only squeaked. She was runt of the litter and never grew bigger than a coffee cup, she never developed a proper meow. Was adorable. She inspiration for my UN, she was sadly killed by a housemate who didnt see her and stepped on her by accident.

Kat786 · 11/01/2020 10:03

I have a massive ginger boy called Leo. He has a tiny reedy kittens meow it's really funny to hear it coming from a giant. He also chatters if I sneeze or if he's trying to catch flies or looking at birds outside. He also chirps at me and goes adorable " mmmmmm" sounds too as greetings or when he's happy

undercoveraessedai · 11/01/2020 10:11

This thread has made me smile so much!

NinjaCat chats all the time, sometimes a nice polite "mow" and sometimes a sweary "MEOWWWWWW". She also purrps and chirps happily. Didn't know cats could swear till she came home to me!

FluffyCat is quieter, she doesn't have a meow meow, but she makes small sad noises (even when she's happy) which get louder if you don't guess what she's asking for. So "eep?" becomes "eeeeep eeeeeep" becomes "EEEEEP" accompanied by paws and claws 😂

Squigean · 11/01/2020 10:13

My cat is a massive ginger too Kat786, his meow is terribly polite and gentle.

Though occasionally when I'm leaving for work he follows me up to a particular pedestrian shortcut. He then sits at the end and meows very loudly at me as I walk away. My DC call it his 'mega meow'. (He sometimes follows them as they leave for school and does the same.)

TW2013 · 11/01/2020 10:21

One says meow when he comes into the house and owwwt when he wants to go out. The other chirrups when she has caught a butterfly (the only thing she can catch) and it then promptly escapes from her mouth. She also says wheellloo when she comes in.

Kat786 · 11/01/2020 11:49

Smigean your boy sounds (almost!!) As sweet as Leo! Does he snore? The only loud thing about my Leo is his snore it's a real big man's noise! He also kinda purrs and snores as he's drifting off. We call this porring!
Anyone else's cat do this?

Nettie1964 · 11/01/2020 11:56

❤❤❤❤my rescue bottle fed hand reared thinks i am his mother. He makes a variety of strange noises. They all reduce me to slavery. I realised i was being had when he cried pitifully when 1 of he dogs sniffed him and pushed him over.😁 he had been slyly tormenting the poor dog for hours. He knows i am fussing over him saying gently gently if the dogs are rough then scolding them. He just looks smug when i pick him up . He would still like a bottle too he howls at the cupbord in which it was kept and goes mental if i open ot x

eurochick · 11/01/2020 12:31

We've got sister kittens. To begin with they would chirp and make little gremlin noises to one another. At about six months they started meowing occasionally. Mainly at us if they want something but also if they lose the other in the house they meow really loudly a few times and the other one always comes running. They still do the chirruping and gremlin noises to each other when they are playing too.

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/01/2020 12:33

Ours had a full range of chirups, meows, aroows, yowls and a pissed off loud sniff exhaled when his back was to you & you hadn’t come up with whatever he wanted.

barberousbarbara · 11/01/2020 12:49

My cat is very vocal. We have the full range of sounds from her including huffing, chirps, meowing, howling and everything in between. I know what all the different sounds mean, including the warning meow we get immediately before she is sick. I can also tell when DP picks her up, even if I'm in a different room, due the particular sound she makes. She rarely shuts up, in fact. We wouldn't be without her though.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 11/01/2020 12:51

The older Sev gets, the more vocal he gets. Apart from his little victory song after a poo, and the usual hunting chirps (which do impress neither the wood pigeons nor the crows) he holds miaouwig conversations with me - he seems to expect answers (luckily noone hears me) until he wants to stop.

Pipandmum · 11/01/2020 12:51

One squeaked the other was pretty quiet but I think gave the odd meow.

neversleepagain · 11/01/2020 12:53

Ours does meow but he saves that when asking for food. He makes lots of different sounds for different scenarios.

FenellaVelour · 11/01/2020 12:57

One of mine does. She has different tones for happy, angry and hungry. Sometimes it sounds more like whinging than meowing (that’s the hungry one).

The other one opens her mouth but rarely will a sound actually come out. It’s mostly just a “mat” noise from the movement of her mouth. Occasionally she manages a tiny meow. That said, she can yowl in the middle of the night quite loudly on occasion 🙄

JonestheRemail · 11/01/2020 12:58

I have two, one is a black and white moggie who never makes a sound, but she does not need to as she is excellent at catching your eye and making you do what she wants anyway.

The other is part siamese and very vocal about everything. I could not really call it a meow, more a loud wail. He also chatters to birds which is very sweet (and unsuccessful).

AhoyMrBeaver · 11/01/2020 13:05

Yes, big long meeeeoooows to be let through any closed door. Chirrups and pips for normal conversation.

FenellaVelour · 11/01/2020 13:25

My noisy cat tends to get particularly meow-y when I’m working from home and on an important phone call. I think she assumes I’m talking to her, as she can’t see anyone else around.
