Fleas! Help!!

We have two cats who are a year old, our first pets! I realised we had fleas when the bites started appearing on the kids which I know means they are everywhere in the house. We treat them every month with anti flea stuff from the vets but it's obviously not worked for some reason.
We've done everything we can to get rid - smoke bombed the house, washed and vacuumed washed and vacuumed and today there are more bites. My 7 year old has 27 when I counted them at bath time. I don't know what we are doing wrong but would be really grateful for any advice. I'm having to give the kids antihistamine every night because they are so itchy but it doesn't even feel safe putting them in their beds in case the fleas are there too.

Treat the whole house with a spray that contains permethrin and an insect growth regulator e.g. INDOREX. You want warmth, humidity and vibration before you spray to encourage any pupae to hatch. One room at a time, kids and pets out, heating on, bowl of water on the radiator, hoover, then spray concentrating around skirting boards, and under heavy furniture. Take cats to the vet and get them checked and discuss if they are on the most effective product and check frequency of application. Get them tapewormed too - fleas carry tapeworm.

Also get the flea lamps - very satisfying to see dead ones. Agree with everyone above. Check with the Vet for the prescription flea tabs.

Oh and I used insect repellant on the kids' legs until we got it under control. It really helped.

Use salt as a kind of shake and vac 10 minutes before you hoover. Dries the flea eggs so reinfestation is less likely, to break the cycle. I nearly burnt my house down after a flea epidemic two years ago thanks to fatcat and twatcat but havent had them since. And 6 weekly treatment toox

Get someone in. We only paid £80.

We bought a flat in a horrible, shit state and it turned out to be infested with fleas too. You might need to spend a night or two somewhere else with your dc but would be worth it.

Great ideas thanks everyone - a lot of new things to try! Wish me luck
