Little Madcat was spayed on Thursday. The vet wanted to check on how things were healing after 2 days and we are expected to return in a week (so about 10 days). We have to give her painkiller liquid each morning after food (we were warned it might cause sickness, but alternatives could be found).
She is forever climbing up/on things or us so the vet made the incision on her side rather than underneath (we were warned that the fur might not match exactly afterwards, but that it was rare). At the second check up the vet said we really ought to try to keep the t-shirt on for 10 days as the wound/shaved area may start to itch.
Her brother was castrated before Christmas (I did a post on that). Again we were told she would have a low appetite and be tired.....
She was wobbly on her feet for a day, but fearless. We have a small utility room so we emptied that and popped her in there for a few hours with a bed, litter tray, water and a little bit of food (until she started to destroy the door frame). She is in a medical vest/t shirt, not a cone, but seems to enjoy being wrapped in a blanket (almost like swaddling). She spends a lot of time wrapped up alongside one of us or on our lap/shoulder.
I did 2 things I would recommend to anybody:
-
ask the vet to trim her claws whilst dopey (Madcat is a clingy kitten and liked her cuddles). When getting over the anaesthetic she was forever kneading/pawing on my lap/shoulder so it was great she couldn't hurt us.
-
Medical t shirt instead of cone
This is pure genius (though it did cost nearly £20). She is able to wee and poo without soiling it (phew) and hasn't managed to get it off (not for want of trying). I presume the vet put it on when the kitten was unconscious as it is very snug.
Unfortunately her brother still refuses to recognise her - for the first day he would hiss at the scent of her on our clothing. The house is a Feliway haze and we have been trying to transfer scent/blankets and toys between the two cats but we are still a divided family. Poor boycat seem really frightened of her but they will now just about tolerate eating in the same room together. We really can't leave them unsupervised.
Good luck OP. I've made a mental note to get 2 boy cats again next time and tackle both surgeries on the same day!
