What to expect after spaying?

Demelza is off to be spayed on the 15th. What is to be expected after? What can I do to make her comfortable?
She’s so hyper I’m worried about her doing some damage 🙈

Little Madcat was spayed on Thursday. The vet wanted to check on how things were healing after 2 days and we are expected to return in a week (so about 10 days). We have to give her painkiller liquid each morning after food (we were warned it might cause sickness, but alternatives could be found).

She is forever climbing up/on things or us so the vet made the incision on her side rather than underneath (we were warned that the fur might not match exactly afterwards, but that it was rare). At the second check up the vet said we really ought to try to keep the t-shirt on for 10 days as the wound/shaved area may start to itch.

Her brother was castrated before Christmas (I did a post on that). Again we were told she would have a low appetite and be tired.....

She was wobbly on her feet for a day, but fearless. We have a small utility room so we emptied that and popped her in there for a few hours with a bed, litter tray, water and a little bit of food (until she started to destroy the door frame). She is in a medical vest/t shirt, not a cone, but seems to enjoy being wrapped in a blanket (almost like swaddling). She spends a lot of time wrapped up alongside one of us or on our lap/shoulder.

I did 2 things I would recommend to anybody:

  1. ask the vet to trim her claws whilst dopey (Madcat is a clingy kitten and liked her cuddles). When getting over the anaesthetic she was forever kneading/pawing on my lap/shoulder so it was great she couldn't hurt us.

  2. Medical t shirt instead of cone
This is pure genius (though it did cost nearly £20). She is able to wee and poo without soiling it (phew) and hasn't managed to get it off (not for want of trying). I presume the vet put it on when the kitten was unconscious as it is very snug.

Unfortunately her brother still refuses to recognise her - for the first day he would hiss at the scent of her on our clothing. The house is a Feliway haze and we have been trying to transfer scent/blankets and toys between the two cats but we are still a divided family. Poor boycat seem really frightened of her but they will now just about tolerate eating in the same room together. We really can't leave them unsupervised.

Good luck OP. I've made a mental note to get 2 boy cats again next time and tackle both surgeries on the same day!

Mine were neutered just before Christmas. Both (boy and girl) were absolutely fine. In fact if you didn't notice girl cats shaved side you would never have guessed she was neutered. Neither got a cone or a body suit and the wound didnt bother either of them at all. No licking or grooming the area. Girl cat had 2 doses of pain relief and was see 5 days after the op and then again a week after that. She had internal stitches and some surgical glue. That's all healed up perfectly and her hairs growing back nicely.

How is it going @Foxton20? Our kittens are clearly sensitive little souls.

Day 5 here and were are still on a major peacekeeping mission, though Madcats now can tolerate being in the same room for a minute or 2. DH and I are currently sleeping in separate rooms with a cat each as they have learned how to open a lot of the doors in the house (and the doors they can't open get scratched).

I read somewhere about vanilla essence between shoulders, base of tail and chin. It might have helped a bit. I was tempted to upgrade to my vanilla bean paste, but that would leave suspicious looking marks on the T shirt We've toyed with ditching the t-shirt, but we are worried that bobcat would accidentally lash out at her stitched side. Otherwise she is healing well and naturally playful.

Hi!

It’s on Monday she gets “done”.

Fingers crossed they start to get along! I rang the vets and asked if there was any extra charges because it seems every time I go I end up paying for things I didn’t know about 😂

She has to stop eating at 8pm the night before and I think she will find that hard lol.

We had the same problem when one of our kittens had to wear the body suit . One cat didn’t recognise the other and was horrid . It took about 10 days to heal and I washed the suit at some point and that seemed to make a difference and now the suit is off the cats are best of friends again .

Madcats · 08/01/2020 13:48

Hooray! No major battles this morning. After much bum-sniffing they seem to recognise each other and have played together.

They are currently curled up together.

This has taken almost 6 full days to to the hour.

Foxton you have a few days to start shifting her last feeding forward gradually. We had to starve from 9pm and were able to drop her off at the vets before we'd normally get round to feeding them. Hope it all goes smoothly.

Mine didn't get any kind of cone or bodysuit. She did bounce around a lot after the OP playing with our other cat and the incision site swelled up so she got put on "bedrest" and locked in the ensuite for a few days till it went down again.
