Pet urine cleaner?

Can anyone recommend a cleaning product that actually works please?! I've tried all sorts and he still goes back to pee in the same place so he must be able to smell it still even though we can't. We've pulled that area of carpet up and cleaned the tiles and concrete underneath because we're due to have wooden floors fitted soon and I wanted to make sure it was fully dry first. We've even ripped the shifting boards off! I'm so worried he's going to pee on the new flooring!

Can you put a litter tray in the area he is peeing in? Pets at home sells enzyme cleaners. It may not be that he smells it, just that its habit to pee there

Unfortunately not, it's right by the front door. I've tried a spray from wilko and one from pets at home. Also tried vinegar, bicarbonate soda, biological washing powder. Tried a citrus deterrent spray. Tried putting a sheet of foil on the floor- the sound makes them jump when they stand on it- it worked temporarily then became a new toy 🙄

Are there other cats in the neighbourhood? Peeing there could be a territory thing. Do they use a litter tray at all?

theSnuffster · 04/01/2020 17:47

We have two cats, from the same litter so I assume no territory issues? They get on well. We have two litter trays but both cats will use either tray. It's just now and again boy cat decides to pee on the floor 😡 They're indoor cats so although there are lots of cats nearby I wouldn't have thought ours would be aware of them? Aside from seeing through the windows I guess?

They would likely be able to see and smell other cats. Other cats may even spray near your door which could be why he marks there. I assume your cats are neutered/spayed?

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/01/2020 18:42

They’ll know the other cat is there. You can get water proof silicone sealer for laminate floors in wet areas.

Quickstep sell it.

Have you got three trays and fine grain litter? Mine wouldn’t use the woodchip litter.

theSnuffster · 04/01/2020 20:01

Yes both neutered as soon as they were old enough. The two male cats from next door do wander through our garden occasionally, maybe that's the problem. How annoying!

We tried several litters and settled on silica crystals but both cats seemed happy to use whatever.

They don't work, at preventing them peeing in the same spot. They are good at getting rid of the smell and cleaning the area, but not much else.

It might be worth trying with lemon - i don't mean a citrus cleaner, but an actual lemon. Squeeze its juice over the area the cat's peeing on, and leave the lemon peel there. Your floor will smell of lemon, but it's better than cat pee! We tried this when next door's thug cat was bullying ours as she was going in and out of the catflap (he left a catshit calling card on the doorstep) - worked a treat! It's cheap and easy so it might be worth a try. Move the litter trays to another area though, as it'll put them off using the trays

Try bicarb mixed with vinegar.

This is good stuff!

I've tried bicarb and vinegar but thank you. Today I sprayed a load of vinegar over the area and left it to dry.

I made a citrus spray a while back using a recipe online, it was basically orange and lemon peel boiled up if I remember rightly. I'll definitely get sone lemons to try though! I'd have a whole bowl of them sat there if I could.... sadly that would mean we couldn't use the front door 😂

Thanks moonlightmistletoe but we've taken the carpet up. It's currently tiles (and concrete round the edges where the tiles have crumbled over the years.)

Try putting treats down there so he associates that area with food rather than spray.

theSnuffster · 07/01/2020 17:18

Yes, fab idea! Thanks, I hadn't thought of that.
I sprayed vinegar there and when that dried put lemon juice and a little pot of lemon peel. Once that's all dried out I'll definitely be trying treats! New flooring goes down next weekend hopefully so fingers crossed!
