Third eyelid?

My poor little cat has a third eyelid come over each of his eyes, and I've done some googling but it's scaring me to death!

I phoned the emergency vet last night straight away when we noticed and she wasn't unduly concerned and said wait until the vets open tomorrow to have him looked at. She said it could be a virus, gastrointestinal problem or something worse but as long as he was eating/drinking/going to the toilet as usual not to worry. Obviously I am 😫

Has this happened to anyone else's cat and if so what was it that caused it?

Many thanks!

My boy had this for a couple of months. The vet couldn't quite figure out what was wrong with him but believed he'd been poorly with a virus that he couldn't quite shake off.

He's fine now. It worried me a lot at the time though. If he's eating and drinking ok hopefully it's not something serious.

This is usually when they are unwell, though can happen if dehydrated.

Bobmcbob · 01/01/2020 16:41

Yes, my old DC had this once. He was a bit dehydrated following a bug (not that we knew he had a bug, seemed fine in himself). If vet wasn’t worried then just make sure your DC has water and wet food (and maybe keep him in with a litter tray so he doesn’t go wondering if he’s feeling a bit under the weather?)

ohdoriswheresthesalad · 01/01/2020 16:50

Thank you.

I'm pretty sure he's not dehydrated as he has been drinking - I've filled his bowl up this afternoon and was nearly empty from yesterday afternoon.
He does keep sneezing so not sure if thats contributing too?

Yes he is being kept inside with the litter tray just in case.

It's so worrying they can't tell you what's wrong!

He now has an upset stomach!

Oh my goodness. Your poor cat. And poor you they are a worry. Fingers crossed they are okay

ohdoriswheresthesalad · 07/01/2020 22:34

He's still not right. I took him to the vets and they said probably an infection- maybe he's eaten something outside he should t have.
She gave me some promax paste and said it should settle his tummy - 3 days dosage, cleared up....upset tummy is back now.
Vet is leaving some antibiotics out for the morning but I'm so worried he may have some underlying problem even though the vet said he's a young and healthy cat. Doesn't stop me worrying!

That does sound like he’s drinking a lot of the bowl was only filled up yesterday? My cats will empty a water bowl in a week and there’s two of them. They do have wet food though...

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/01/2020 22:46

Does his food contain cereals? It made my cat very ill as a kitten.

ohdoriswheresthesalad · 07/01/2020 23:36

I have no idea about cereals, he's nearly two and has had the same food since he was one?

Poor kitty has poo running out of him, as he walks it's just dripping. We've had to put him in the bathroom overnight to try and contain it.
I feel awful for him!

I hope the vet was right and it is a bug and not something more serious 😭

Which food is he on?. Try him on boiled chicken breast to give his system a rest.

You can use frozen chicken breasts.

ohdoriswheresthesalad · 08/01/2020 11:33

He is on felix as good as it looks.
I have been and got some grain free to try when he's feeling better. We've
Been to the vets and he now has antibiotics. Any tips on how to give them?!'

The poo this morning was absolutely horrendous bless his heart, all over the floor 🙁

He's had lots of fuss and love this morning but isn't a happy boy!

Usually you can crush antibiotics into food or cat soup, do check with the vet first though.

slipperywhensparticus · 08/01/2020 12:04

Pill pockets? He needs a bland diet

ohdoriswheresthesalad · 08/01/2020 12:08

Checked and can crush them but he's not having any of it. He's meowing like mad that he can't come through the house. I feel so cruel.

Pill shooter?

ohdoriswheresthesalad · 08/01/2020 18:32

He's had a lickeeZ yogurt thing and has taken the antibiotic like that which is brilliant 😃

Oh well done, I’m sure they have a radar for “they want me to eat this, it must be poison”.

ohdoriswheresthesalad · 08/01/2020 20:35

I've just sprinkled some in his fish and some with the licky thing and he's had the other dose thank goodness. The dribbling from his back passage has stopped but he keeps washing himself there, is that normal?

OP posts:
Fluffycloudland77 · 08/01/2020 21:00

They lick things that irritate them.

ohdoriswheresthesalad · 08/01/2020 21:24

Ahhh ok thank you. I just hope he's on the road to recovery! Many thanks for all your help Smile
