How long to wait before adopting a kitten?

Hi there,

I have been desperate to adopt a kitten for the longest amount of time but my mum current landlady won't let me have one (stamps foot)! Fast forward, I'm due to move into my new place in the next week or so. It's on a fairly quiet residential street with plenty of space and a massive garden by London standards. I'm really excited at the prospect of a new addition to our new home, but I'm wondering how long is a sensible amount of time to wait? I've read so many stories about rescues not approving adoptions over things like not having a cat flap installed at the point of adoption (even if the intention is to have one installed), not wanting to allow adoption where there are children in the home (my DD is almost 8). I guess I'm wondering with a new home, what else I need to think about before proceeding? Any advice would be very much appreciated Smile

Once you've unpacked, painted decorated etc as you won't be able to have your windows open for 6 weeks. We had a cat flap fitted very easily

Is your new place rented, or have you bought? If rented, rescues may ask for proof the landlord allows cats.

A rescue should match you with the right cat for your family. They should also be able to advise on cat proofing the home.

Obviously, wait until you are moved in, unpacked and settled before you start looking, as a new pet and house move upheaval don't mix.

Thanks for the replies

The house is HA and thankfully pets are allowed so I'll obtain the written permission before hand. We actually don't own hardly anything to unpack! Thats a bonus is as much that the house won't be chaotic for a period of time as I'll be adding to a blank canvas over time rather than trying to battle my way though boxes for weeks on end.

CP volunteer here and in London. The centre where I am ask for written landlord permission before allowing an adoption. I would acquire proof before you go to adopt. Some cats are suitable to live with kids, others not so it's all done on a case by case basis rather than blanket rules.
They will want to check you don't live right by a busy road or railway line that the cat could easily access.

@Vinorosso74 As it happens my new house is 5 minutes walk away from a CP so hopefully we can adopt from there!
The permission is easy to obtain, I'll drop them an email in the morning. I was at my new house today so spent a bit of time scoping out where to set up for out prospective furry friend, we have a nice cosy spot under our stairs. I can't wait!
