How to stop dcat jumping on worktop?

I bloody hate it! But Demelza has learn how to use the kitchen door handles as a ladder.

How do I stop it?!

Mine quickly learnt "Down" when found on the work surfaces.
Then they worked out I could often hear them jump up if I was in the house, and would come tell them "Down".
I'm 100% sure they go up there when we aren't about tho.

Cats often dont like foil - so you could line the surfaces with foil for a bit, and see if that discourages her.
Or space empty tin cans along the edge to make a horrible noise when she jumps up there. Both may be worth a try.

I just used to wipe round before cooking.

Sharp hiss and loud clap every time she tries.

I pick mine up, put them outside and shut the door. They have learned to not always do it.

Quick splash with a few drops of water and a clap...

Yeah I’ve tried everything including hissing, firmly telling them to go down, creating barriers of cans and even once squirting the cat with a water pistol from a Christmas cracker every time he went up there before I decided that was a bit mean. The lesson he took from all of this was was that he wasn’t allowed up there when someone was looking... I’d recommend a quick wipe down with antibac spray of all surfaces before preparing food.

I clap and shout 'Get down' it works 9 times out 10. If not I push her on the bottom so she has to jump.

I’m sure someone on here’s cat used to watch her coming home on the kitchen windowsill and dismount before she actually got in the house.

You put tinfoil on your worktops
Clap
Make a loud noise
Hiss
Push them down
And eventually admit defeat knowing they do it when you’re not there anyway and start cleaning your worktops before you use them.

Weirdly , my 2 cats son't walk on the worktops

And no I'm not delusional , they leave muddy pawprints on the floor , the windowsills,the tablecover oilcloth , my bed .....so I know where they walk , just follow the evidence ........

They expect more than a clap though, they'd want a round of applause, whopping, whistling and ticker tape

Unfortunately my current kitten Haribo is a nightmare. He actually enjoys being sprayed with water and the word "down" is not in his vocabulary.

I think if you start when they are a kitten and you are around all the time you have a slight chance of teaching them.

If you miss that window then tough - the best they learn is not to get caught.

My cats don’t go on the work top but only because it’s a poor vantage point and a bit boring. At my old house it afforded a great view of the garden and they were up there whenever my back was turned no matter what I did to discourage.
I think unfortunately if it’s an attractive spot the best you can do is train them to not do it when you’re there.
