Cat litter crisis

We have a kitten who was using Costco Simply Purrfect cat litter prior to coming to us so we used the same when he arrived. It was brilliant. Unfortunately it’s now impossible to get hold of either from Costco or Amazon so after seeing tons of recommendations we moved to Cats Best litter.
Both we and the cat hate it. It’s dusty, doesn’t sift and doesn’t clump well. We moved the kitten to it gradually but this weekend he used the bathroom floor instead of the litter box.
HELP. Can anyone recommend a litter more like the Costco type - clay based, maximum clumping, powerful odour control. Haven’t tried Catsan though haven’t seen great reviews for it.
Thank you so much - desperate to get this sorted.

Is it a fine sandy litter or does it have proper granules? Ultra clumping litters tend to be the sandy ones. Check zooplus for a large range of clumping clay based litters

DookofBust · 16/12/2019 07:58

I use the non clumping catsan, wouldn’t recommend.

Tried a wood based one and the whole downstairs smelled like a hamster cage.

I need to find something else too OP.

Sainsbury's clumping litter is good. There was a supply problem a month or so ago but it's now back in the shops.

StCharlotte · 16/12/2019 08:26

Clumping litter is minging.

Wooden pellets all the way. Smells nice, covers bad smells wells. Really absorbent. Don't need to change so often. Etc etc...

StCharlotte · 16/12/2019 08:28

Sorry - I see the one you're using is wood based. Oh well.

ElluesPichulobu · 16/12/2019 08:51

we used wooden pellets with previous cats and are using clumping clay this time. I hugely prefer the clumping so far. it is so convenient just being able to scoop out the lumps and have the remainder pretty much clean whereas with wood you have to empty the whole lot.

however pets at home have stopped stocking the litter we have been using - sivocat blue signal. we bought some Sanicat stuff which looked similar but the perfumed scent on it is utterly vile so I am also looking for recommendations - needs to be ultra clumping and absorb odours without using additional perfumes.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/12/2019 09:33

Intersand classics it's brilliant!

justcly · 16/12/2019 10:58

Morrisons Super Absorbent. It's easily as good as Catsan, but a lot cheaper.

How do you need to change it less often? I never found that at all and to all turned to sawdust which I fond hard to remove and leave any pellets behind. It also didn't smell nice - it still smelt like cat wee and poo. 😂

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 16/12/2019 11:03

I think all cat litter is "minging" 😂😂

MrsWonderland · 16/12/2019 11:12

@elluespichulobu exactly!! Don't want anything with a fake smell

I think it's a pets at home clumping one I've got. I much prefer clumping as you can remove pee and poo. Catsan non clumping stuff was horrible and got smelly really quickly.

Worlds best is better than cats best and is small granules but not clay based. Cats best smart pellets are clumping but look like the wood pellets. Zooplus has a whole range of clumping/non clumping/fragranced/unfragranced litters

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 16/12/2019 11:22

I've found pets at home ultra clumping to be the best over the years and we have 4 cats

CraazyCatLady · 16/12/2019 11:40

I'm a cat litter connoisseur. Tried loads of different ones. The best is Sanicat diamonds (lavender). It's a bit more expensive than the others, but lasts much longer. It locks the odour into the crystals. You don't need to change the litter as often, it also doesn't track as much as other cat litters and isn't dusty. You can get it at Pets@Home, or you can get a similar product in small bags from Wilkos.

Lidl own brand clumping clay litter. Brilliant. And cheap.

KittenVsXmastree · 16/12/2019 12:13

Dont move to anything Tesco. It's been a bloody nightmare trying to get cat litter there recently. The o ly thing reliably on the shelf (indeed the only thing on the shelf today) is catsan.

Looks like I'm off on a supermarket trawl later. Cats dont like wood here....

DookofBust · 16/12/2019 12:26

When I had my three old cats I used Pettex. Clumping, fullers earth/clay. I don’t remember it smelling so might try that again.

My vet told me not to use sand like ultra clumping litter with a kitten. He has direct experience of it being eaten 😳. Pets corner told me not to buy it for a kitten too.

I need to drive to my old horse feed merchant, they will have tons of choice.

I have also tried Aldi litter recent- big thumbs down 👎🏻. Very very dusty if pieces, minute pieces, 20% dust.

I am back on the wood pellets for the rest of this week. Hamster cage smell 👎🏻.

AfterSomeAdvice1234 · 16/12/2019 17:10

I use the Aldi own one and not only is it cheap, it's brilliant! No complaints from us.

Lunafortheloveogod · 16/12/2019 17:18

We use the oddly named “Worlds Best Cat Litter” it’s corn not clay though but it clumps up fairly well and it’s apparently flushable (breaks down in plenty of water but you shouldn’t flush pet waste anyway) it’s been fine with a tom cat and his inevitable smells. It’s fine grained enough too that it’s not massive pellets or jaggy stone like pieces.

Other fav is cat sans easy bagged stuff, it comes with a built in bag you lay inside the tray and you just lift the whole thing out to change it. Doesn’t clump but the bag thing has a puppy pad like base so never had an issue.. preferred it while pregnant since it meant minimal touching of the tray and bending to clean the box.

KittyMarmalade · 16/12/2019 17:37

@stcharlotte - why do you say that clumping litter is minging? Surely it's less smelly and more hygenic to quickly and easily remove the entire wee or poo?
I have no complaints about Sainsburys Clumping litter. We scoop as soon as we notice anything in it, taking out anything unpleasant and the tray filled with a whole bag lasts around a week. Then we tip away what's left, wash the tray out throughly and refill.

Plump82 · 16/12/2019 19:13

I was using the same stuff as you op and discovered it was then impossible to get hold of. I'm actually glad because I know use Cats Best which I think amazing. It clumped perfectly. You do need it deep though. But I barely need to top it up. I did consider a brand called Intersands which I think is a very similar style to the Costo one.

scaryteacher · 18/12/2019 01:14

The Pettex is what we use now we are back in UK. Had a non clumping one in Belgium, and everything got covered in a grey dust. The Pettex doesn't do that.
