Are any collars ok?

Cat has never had a collar but as he does a really good job of convincing people he's homeless and never been fed I thought it might be a good idea.

Read reviews and got a breakaway one and he didn't mind wearing it at all surprisingly.

Last night he was on my lap and I checked his collar but realised it didn't spring open at all even when pulling really hard (it did initially when unfitted it) it took dh and me having a go and eventually I had to cut it off as it just would not spring apart.

Clearly this isn't safe and has shaken me up a bit. Are any safe? I know ideally no collar is best but are there any that are safer than others?

No not really.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 10/12/2019 18:37

It was an Ancol one with excellent reviews which said it spring apart too easily if anything.

No, none are safe. I've seen injuries caused by 'safe' ones.

Our cat has a Superkit collar, it's pricey but well made and unclips easily.

All our cats wore collars and Cheddar were one because she is absolutely invisible in the dark. Never had any problems.

I almost lost one of mine to a safety collar so I'd say no.

TheClausSeason · 10/12/2019 21:15

We use a breakaway one that's reflective (black cat). She's lost about ten of them over the course of a year so I'm pretty sure they come off!

Waveymaevey · 10/12/2019 21:16

The rogz cat night cat ones have a different weight safety clasp. I have never had it not open and my cats have left them all sorts of places

OldElPasoHadAChicken · 10/12/2019 21:30

I've known someone who lost a cat and someone who was lucky not to lose a cat using the easy to open ones.

They're just better than the other kind.

My first ever kitten went through several of them in his short life. He even managed to lose his last one before going under someone's tyres so we only got an answer to where he was, when someone who saw it happen then saw our posters and put two and two together.

But I've had an overfriendly rescue returned to me a few times thanks to having a collar on.

Swings and roundabouts. I'd still prefer a quick release on an outdoor cat, but I'd test it regularly.

DCats have worn the cheap ones I buy in Poundland... for about 7.5 yrs? DCats lose their collars regularly so they definitely come undone (somehow). I guess I have to buy... 3-4/yr each cat?

Jj2431 · 14/12/2019 12:32

My cat wears an ancol collar that breaks away and it does what it says. I only have to pull slightly and it comes off.

Alloalloallo · 14/12/2019 12:35

We nearly lost our cat when her breakaway collar didn’t breakaway so I’ve never put one on again

We were so lucky to find her when we did

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 14/12/2019 12:42

He's not wearing one at the moment,I'm not comfortable about it at all especially as his collar was an Ancol one which had great reviews. He's such an active cat it's probably better if he doesn't have one at all.

We've always had collars on our darker cat as you cant see her in the dark ag all and she wont stay indoors no matter what I try and she loses about 8 a year so they must come off easily...we've used the cheap ones from wilko.
