High as a kite kitten after pompom removal

Just that, really.

The cone of shame managed to stay on for about 30 minutes. We were told to give him bland food little and often. The lad is ravenous and has demolished anything he can lay his hands on and has taken to proclaiming loudly when he finds the bowl empty.

He didn't read the memo about staying quiet. He is haring up and down the ground floor with his favourite toy in his mouth, pausing occasionally to try to kick it to shreds.

His sister has disowned him.

It is going to be a long afternoon.

Oh dear.
I was told to give my cats boiled chicken or white fish after their anaesthetics. Err that isn't happening as I know they won't eat it! Good luck OP!!

Goldensunnydays81 · 09/12/2019 15:27

Sorry that did make me giggle!
My girl had her op a few weeks ago and we got her a little suit to wear! She spent the first few hours walking around backwards like bambi on ice Shock

minniemoll · 09/12/2019 15:30

I was advised to keep my boy in overnight and feed him bland food after he had his bits off - like yours he demolished his usual food and then ran about like a crazy thing until I gave in and let him out. He was fine once he'd had a good run round.

Winterdaysarehere · 09/12/2019 15:32

Maybe cable tie his paws into pairs?? Front and back!!. Sorry no help.
With no pic its hard to give decent advice ime...

viccat · 09/12/2019 15:42

It's such a small incision for boys that I don't bother with cones (and neither does the rescue I've fostered for), or keeping them calm - they don't have the same post-neuter risks girls do. Just keep him indoors and let him eat if he wants to.

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/12/2019 16:46

It’s the ketamine.

Madcats · 09/12/2019 16:46

He managed to stay still for a couple of seconds. He's now decided that it is far more fun to hang "sloth like" from underneath the radiator bed.

I am the same as @viccat no cones for boys, no need to keep quiet ( no stitches in muscle). Just keep
In overnight as for first 24 hours after anaesthetic they are not able to thermoregulate properly.

BovaryX · 09/12/2019 17:09

Gosh he’s lovely! He looks in fine fettle!

Madcats · 09/12/2019 17:37

I had wild hopes that, after a night with a cone on, I might stand a fighting chance of popping a collar on him.

He's now sat trying to attack the flashing ads on Mumsnet (so he must be a tiny bit tired now)!

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/12/2019 17:47

Why do you want to put a collar on him?.

Madcats · 09/12/2019 18:25

@Fluffycloudland77

We have a high walled garden, so I plan to let them out in due course.

These 2 are fearsome with their feather toys so I had hoped a collar with a bell on would give the birds a fighting chance. The old Madcats were having none of that nonsense...

Girl cat currently doesn't recognise her brother because he still smells of the vets - lots of hissing and sulking from her and a puzzled drugged up boy without his bits.

It's going to be a long night!

Would they have used ketamine 15 years ago? I just remember the old Madcats acting a bit puzzled.

He’s looking very sprightly considering! Mine had a rapid recovery too and was back to creating chaos the next day. He looks like quite a determined chap, or maybe that’s the drugs....

TroysMammy · 09/12/2019 18:31

Haribo was the same after pompom removal. He barely glanced at the vet's aftercare sheet. He didn't have a cone or stitches and I gave him boiled chicken which he not only wolfed down he demanded more. I posted here at the time and was advised he was probably given ketamine.

simonisnotme · 12/12/2019 20:25

wow he is gorgeous

SagelyNodding · 12/12/2019 20:32

Mine was the same! Zero pain, full of energy from the second I got him home from the vets... If it wasn't for his shaved bits I would not have believed they operated on him Grin
Interesting about the ketamine-I had no idea!

crimsonlake · 12/12/2019 20:36

I have a girl and she was the same as what you are describing. I had to take the cone off straight away as she was having none of it. Keep her quiet? She was rampaging around the house all night and kept me awake.

Papergirl1968 · 12/12/2019 23:30

Socks was done yesterday and was high as a kite too. Considering it’s the feline equivalent of a hysterectomy, I was expecting her to be sleepy and quiet, but no, she is even more hyper than usual. She just raced in from another room, belted across the sofa and leapt on to her brother’s back.
And she’s been starving - can’t fill her up. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Papergirl1968 · 12/12/2019 23:31

Ps I haven’t bothered with the cone as she’s not biting or scratching at the wound.

Minta85 · 13/12/2019 16:41

He looks like a Siamese? Beautiful boy. My Burmese boy jumped out of his cat carrier and bit my hand after pompom removal! Not at all dopey.
