Trying to find a sofa my cat will not claw to death

My cat has ruined my sofa as she has clawed it to death. It's not a huge problem now as the sofa is now 20 years old. However, I am considering what sort of sofa to buy next so she cannot ruin it. At the moment I am considering leather or fake leather (not shiny but like a suede). If you have either of these types of upholstery on your furniture does your cat still claw it ?

Is she stretching up to claw it?.

Bufferingkisses · 04/12/2019 22:07

Mine have all clawed leather. I now have fabric with these and it has stopped altogether. I wasn't convinced but thought it was worth a shot as they're not expensive. Really glad I did!

We've had a wicker suite (conservatory furniture) for years now. Completely cat proof.

I had this problem with my old sofa too! They didn’t claw my leather sofas and I now have a velvet sofa which they also leave alone because the weave is very tight and they don’t get the pleasure of getting their claws in! Would recommend either

I had an Ikea ektorp that was shredded. I took a chance on a leather one and they've not touched it!

PinglePongle · 04/12/2019 22:29

I have leather dining chairs and they are covered in tiny holes from claws Sad

PlumsGalore · 04/12/2019 22:49

Whicker???!! I had whicker dining chairs and the cats thought they were the best scratching post ever. The cheeky little fuckers have clawed the leather sofas too and I never see them do it, it’s more reaching up and stretching. The only thing that works is closing the door!

Gingerkittykat · 04/12/2019 23:15

Mine have never clawed leather but fabric is seen as a scratchpost. I don't think there is an easy answer to this one.

I've had to buy a metal framed day bed. It has a memory foam mattress on it and a load of cushions. It's absolutely not what I would choose if I didn't have cats. But it's indestructible, comfortable in its way and of course great to sleep on should the need ever arise.

We have leather but we also have loads of tall scratching posts and sisal mats for the cat to scratch which minimises scratching on the sofa, I also initially sprayed it with feliway spray.

BovaryX · 05/12/2019 07:27

I really wouldn’t recommend a leather sofa. We had a large mirror with a leather surround (which I hatedGrin) and Prince Cat used to stretch up and rip at it in ecstasy. Whilst watching himself. When he had sliced through both sides I binned it. What about a velvet sofa?

MashedSpud · 05/12/2019 07:33

Do you have those flat cardboard scratch pads?

My cat never touched the sofas until dd left for uni so my sister bought her one. I was sceptical because she hated the bog standard upright but she loves them and doesn’t scratch the sofas anymore.

SarahMused · 05/12/2019 07:37

We have the same problem including with leather and wicker. My solution has been to go to Ikea and buy their loose covered sofas and arm chairs. I am trying to deter the cats as much as possible but you can get a spare or replacement cover Without having to buy a whole new piece of furniture. There are companies that make covers too although more expensive than Ikea they do give a good range of fabrics.

Thanks all for your input. A lot to think about here !
