Potentially stupid cat flap question

Mizydoscape · 02/12/2019 19:10

The catflap in our upvc door is ancient and draughty. Regularly falls apart if the cat is too overzealous when launching herself through on a regular basis.

So my stupid question number 1 of the day: if I get a new one, is the hole size universal? Especially if I stick to the same brand.

  1. are there any types of cat flap that aren't so draughty? It's in the kitchen door which is open plan with the lounge and the breeze blows right through.

I've changed ours a few times and with the same brand the sizes seem the same. Ours is one that recognises the microchip as we had frequent "visitors" and this seems to be quite draft proof as it gives a good seal u til she comes close enough to unlock it.

Sorry, I misread this as 'stupid flat cap' question!

I knew they were fashionable again, but still...Grin

I have this one: www.amazon.co.uk/SureFlap-Flap-Microchip-Identification-White/dp/B003EGIM3O/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=cat+flap&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1575318714&sr=8-5
It only allows your own microchipped cat in or out and closes quite firmly. It fits my medium size, 4kg tom cat well but might be tight for a chubster.

I don't think the hole size is necessarily universal, the installation instructions for the cat flap should specify what size hole is required. We also just got a Sureflap microchip one (which doesn't let any draughts in, we had the same problem as you with our old one!).

The installation instructions are on their website, I can't remember the exact dimensions but there was both a minimum and maximum glass hole size it can be installed into.

The hole isn't always exactly the same between brands so stick to the same brand as you have unless you potentially are prepared to cut the hole bigger. I wanted to replace my sureflap and they didn't have it in petsathome so I got one that dimension wise looked the same but it was a few mil off and because the hole in my door was quite snug it had to go back. I got another sureflap and it was fine. If they're properly screwed in they shouldn't budge. Sureflap isn't draughty and as microchip activated won't blow open, only opens for specific cats.

My first thought was "stupid cat" but then we live with a very beautiful but intellectually challenged moggy! Grin

Thanks all, I guess first step then is to disassemble current cat flap and measure the hole size.

I don't need a super fancy one and no need for microchip reader. Current cat flap is "petsafe".
