Why don’t people want male kittens?

We have a glut of male kittens in our rescue at the moment, literally every kitten we have is male. They’re all totally adorable. So why do we also have a glut of potential adopters who won’t even look at anything but female kittens? I can’t believe we’re struggling to rehome kittens when we have rehomed our entire stock of adult cats, we’re in a situation where we are clogged up with kittens.

My cat is a black neutered male that I adopted at 18 months and has never sprayed in the house. He’s the softest, cuddliest lap cat in the world (but also a prolific hunter during the summer months and I was still receiving the odd ‘gift’ until a couple of weeks ago). He’s my first ever cat so I have nothing to compare him to but when/ if I was ever to get another I would definitely be biased towards a male.

Smeghead90 · 25/11/2019 19:38

I have 3 black cats, 2 boys 1 girl and the boys are so much more affectionate than the girls, I’d be lost without them

Ski37 · 25/11/2019 19:39

He was also very timid when I went to view him , hissed and tried to bite me but I just had a feeling about him and couldn’t bear to think of his little catty face being left all alone in the cattery. It took him 3-4 months to really come out of his shell and show his personality but now he is the most loving boy ever, very chatty and loves cuddles.

I worked with a cat rescue for a few years and
I would say that cats over 6 and cats that are black were the hardest to rehome.
I don’t really understand the age thing because cats are relatively long living animals and 6 is no age. Kittens went super fast and the lovely gently older cats often overlooked.
We have a boy cat, he’s loving and affectionate,
Doesn’t really leave my side to be honest. He’s gorgeous. He is my first cat, my parents had dogs and I always begged for a cat to no avail.
Soon as we bought our house other half said let’s go get a cat! He’s had cats before and they were all males too. Can’t say I actually have a preference but male animals are usually more chilled. Less hormones, but you can’t blame the girls for that!

If i could take on a boy cat I absolutely would (and have him neutered, if he wasn't already.) They're delightful lazy, squishy buggers.

Chocmallows · 01/12/2019 23:45

I'd avoid them, but only because I prefer to rehome adult cats and kittens of either gender are too springy for me. I love black cats!

Ally8082 · 01/12/2019 23:48

Always had a male cat. They much more friendlier and let you mother them which I love doing so. 🙈 Neighbour’s cat , female really moody. My boy is a bundle of joy. I wonder why your having difficulty in homing them.

ClientListQueen · 01/12/2019 23:57

My real life stuffed animal Grin black, male, meant to have FIV and cat flu. One tooth left
The most affectionate weird cat I have known who would rather cuddle with me than do anything else. He thinks living his best life means sitting in my lap, paw wrapped round my finger and gazing at me Hmm
He doesn't hunt either

No idea. I've had late neutered feral males before, when getting a female is less likely to cause problems, and currently have an ex stray ex Tom that doesn't tolerate other males on his large territory, but otherwise I don't care.

Saying that, I've never actually gone out to actively pick a cat. I've rehomed ferals, but didn't pick them individually, I left it to the rescue. Bar one, but that was offering a home when I wasn't looking. And the only cat I've had from being a kitten was supposedly only here as a temporary foster till she was old enough to be rehomed. Every other cat in my life has arrived of its own accord.

I have a lovely boy cat adopted as part of a bonded pair with his sister. But he is the opposite of all these chilled out cuddly boys. He is more stand offish then his sister and strange about the litter box (hates using a clean fresh one if she hasn’t gone first) . Very very occasionally at about 4am he allows a small cuddle and purrs like a jet engine, it’s worth waiting for.

Ally8082 · 02/12/2019 23:33

My Jasper is like the jet engine that has no off switch 😂.I wouldn’t have it any other way. When we went to adopt a kitten he wouldn’t get out of my mums lap purring away. He’s so cute. A bit of a spoilt boy but, then he’s our baby. Born to be spoilt.

fantasmasgoria1 · 02/12/2019 23:40

It doesn't matter what sex they are in my eyes. I have a black female kitten well nearly adult now but people don't want black cats either. My girl is affectionate, playful, mischievous and gorgeous!

InTropicalTrumpsLand · 02/12/2019 23:50

I don't really care about the sex of the dog or cat. As it happens, I have two females. One is the family dog, still alive (my parents wanted a female so she wouldn't lift her leg when peeing) and I stumbled into dcat just when I was thinking about rescuing one.

I would really like to give dcat a companion because she's impossible (very active, plus loud when bored) but we have to wait for ddog to pass, seeing as rescuing dcat was already terribly stressful for her. If I go ahead with this idea, I'll want a Male cat - just because dcat much prefers males to females when she happens to interact with another cat.

I really hope you find them a home, OP. I rescued dcat on a whim (found her half dead on the streets and thought 'why not'?) and I don't think I'll ever live without cats again, they're fantastic!

violetbunny · 03/12/2019 07:26

I have a real soft spot for boy cats. We have a boy and a girl now and Boycat has definitely stolen my heart! He's my baby Smile

TheSecondMrsAshwell · 03/12/2019 11:27

I always preferred male guinea-pigs, absolutely stuffed with character.

I'd have a couple of black boys like a shot, even if they are middle aged.
Actually, especially if they are middle aged..... But Ashy Cat would have a LOT to say on that matter, none of it good, all of it hissy. Perhaps when she goes to the great sofa in the sky!

Gonetoget · 03/12/2019 11:34

Another one that prefers male cats. I’ve always found them more affectionate and cuddly. The only thing that puts me off getting another male cat is fighting, I would worry about them getting along with my current male cat. I assume (possibly wrongly) that he would be more accepting of a female.

RockinHippy · 03/12/2019 11:46

How strange & so sad Sad

I've always gone for the opposite sex of what we have, so our last adoptee was female, but only because our big soppy Tomcat would probably be bullied by another Tom.

If we had no cats to think about I'd go fir a Tomcat every time, they are much more likely to end up as big soppy cuddly bears as is our current one

RockinHippy · 03/12/2019 11:47

We always have at least one house panther too, I never understand why black cats are left behind at shelters too, they are beautiful

Bickles · 03/12/2019 20:32

Black cats are the best. I have two.
