Fucking cat covered in oil

My usually fluffy white cat has strolled in covered in engine oil, licking himself like mad to try and get clean. I've bathed him in the kitchen sink woth fairy liquid, it took a few attempts but I think I've got rid of most of it.

I'm worried he's going to get really sick - either from the oil or from any fairy liquid I didn't manage to rinse out. He's really distressed so I don't want to start chasing him and bathing him again.

Anything I should look out for other than vomiting? I've got to work tomorrow but I'm scared to leave him Sad

Call and emergency vet and see what they advise. Wouldn’t risk it

Phone an emergency vet and ask for advice.

I don't know if shaving him would be a safer way to make sure the oil is all out of his system.

Second both pps, call emergency vet even if it's just for advice.

Poor thing, any idea how he's come to get covered in oil?

MollyHuaCha · 25/11/2019 00:20

Poor cat

MrsMoastyToasty · 25/11/2019 00:20

We had a cat that this happened to. We tried swarfega and washing up liquid. Said cat objected. Then rang the vets who cleaned the cat up under anaesthetic.

Oil ingestion can cause gastric ulceration, Please phone an out of hours vet.

He seems ok now. I've put the heating on to try and get him dry. I dont want to piss him off by chasing him with a towel but I don't want him to get cold either.

There's a cat that lives nearby and they don't get along - my cat sometimes hides under the cars on the street when it's around.

Our vet isn't open through the night and he's managed to wolf down plenty of water and Dreamies and thankfully he doesn't seem to hate me too much.

X-post Lone does it need to be our own vet? I'm not sure any are open nearby.

I would have suggested lots of babywipes if you had them house, just wipe down like crazy.

X fingers all will be well.

Floralnomad · 25/11/2019 01:01

If you ring your normal vets number they should have the OOH vet number on the message . Vets that close overnight generally use a general OOH service . Hope the cat is ok .

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/11/2019 06:43

All vets have someone you can talk to at night, I think it’s a legal requirement.

It might be a shared line but someone will pick up.

KeepYourCup · 25/11/2019 09:16

He seems ok this morning- back to his dry, fluffy self and no vomiting or apparent trouble through the night.

Poor soul. He's always coming home filthy but I hate distressing him with a bath.
