What do I do with a mouse that is still alive?

One of the cats has brought in a mouse, it is still alive but clearly very shocked (and possibly injured). What do I do with it? Pop it outside and hope for the best for it (obviously keep the cats in)? Something else? I don't particularly want to end up with a mouse living in the house but at the same time I don't want it to die!!

It will die if you put it outside in that state, you could try putting it in a box, with some bedding, water and food for the night, somewhere quiet dark and safe. It might recover then you could let it go.

Kill it - it’s cruel prolonging it’s death. If it’s been bitten by a cat it’s waking dead anyway

When we get an (apparently) uninjured live one we take it outside away from the house & hope it can avoid getting caught again...

Last time we had an injured one we put it in the shed in a bucket, with some kitchen towels & muesli & a bit of water. It did eat some of the muesli. It was dead in the morning Sad but at least it was safe from terrifying marauding cats.

Okay I've taken the middle way (I can't see any injuries on it) so I've put it in a box (with water, air holes and bedding in it). I don't have muesli - what other food could I put in there?

Sweetcorn, bit of a biscuit, cornflakes.
I did this with a baby mouse that one of my cats brought in. It became too tame to release so I still have a mouse living in an old fish tank!

DS tried the box with food approach once - poor thing died anyway. I tend to pop them in the garden - I know I should put them out of their misery but I can't bring myself to do it.

It might survive if given a chance.

They will eat anything really, tiny bit of cheese, cereal, etc

The shoebox with food approach worked with a bird once. I left the box outside, but it was summer and daytime I think. A few hours later I checked it (locked cat indoors) and it was looking quite alert, so I left the lid off and stood back and after a few minutes it hopped out and flew off!
