5 year old female has started acting strangely since yesterday evening. She is constantly in and out of her litter tray, scratching it etc. I've changed it once but it was pretty dry as she normally goes outside. Also, she keeps cleaning her bottom. She keeps miaowing when normally she is queit. She ate last night but not this morning. She lets me stroke her. Vets not open yet. What could be wrong?

Could she be pregnant?

What time is the vets opened?

GeometricGiraffes · 16/11/2019 08:15

Pregnant?

UTI?

Madratlady · 16/11/2019 08:15

Is she doing anything in the litter tray? Could she have a uti?

cherryblossomgin · 16/11/2019 08:19

Could it be worms?

Lindy2 · 16/11/2019 08:22

Mine was like this when she had a UTI. They are quite common in cats.

Has she managed any wee at all? Cat bladders can get blocked which is very serious but that usually happens to boy cats not girls.

When mine had a UTI she started doing tiny wees all around the house and was sick from the pain. There was blood in the wee too.

The vet gave her pain relief medicine and I got cat soup food to try and get as much liquid as possible into her to help clear her system.

It took a few days and poor cat was very uncomfortable when trying to wee, but she recovered fully quite quickly.

She can't be pregnant. Was 'splayed as a kitten.
I can't see that she has done anything in the litter tray. I wonder if she is constipated.
The vets open at 9:30. She is very restless and loud. So unlike her.
She is allowing my DD to stroke her now but I said just gentrly on her back, not her tummy

I’d say UTI or maybe worms. I’m not one to dash immediately to the vet but I would in case it’s a UTI, as they’re horribly uncomfortable and yet easily treated if caught quickly.

Plastictattoo · 16/11/2019 08:24

She was wormed in August

Same with constipation! Hope all is ok.

Plastictattoo · 16/11/2019 08:26

Thanks for your replies. I will phone the vets as soon as they open.
I often wish my cat could talk so we could natter but today, I just wish she could tell me what was wrong

Sounds like cystitis/UTI to me. If it is they are generally quite easily treatable. Call vets as soon as they open.

cherryblossomgin · 16/11/2019 08:32

My cat got a stomach upset from eating a moth, maybe she has ate a bug and its upset her stomach.

SparePantsAndLego · 16/11/2019 08:33

Good call! I don’t think wormers offer long term protection. My understanding is they get rid of any parasite burden at the time they’re given but the animal could be infected in the days or weeks after taking. Most vets recommend a worming schedule based on the med used and likelihood of infection. For example, my dog is wormed monthly but my cat less regularly as he stays indoors. That said, I’d think UTI or constipation is more likely if no scooting. Good luck, hope she’s better soon.

Plastictattoo · 16/11/2019 08:34

Going to get everyone ready to leave the house! Thanks for the advice. I'll let you know what the vet says

Very likely cystitis your cat needs to be seen today.

SparePantsAndLego · 16/11/2019 08:35

As for talking cats, I’m in! Although mine would probably just tell me he needs feeding ALL the time...

Pannalash · 16/11/2019 08:35

Wishing your cat a speedy recovery.

MonChatEstMagnifique · 16/11/2019 08:47

Glad that you're taking her to the vet. My cats have done that when they've had a UTI. Let us know how she gets on, poor thing.

Gingerkittykat · 16/11/2019 08:52

I have dealt with both UTIs and cpnstipation and both had exactly the same symptoms, ie yowling and going to the litter tray constantly but not producing anything.

BirdIsland · 16/11/2019 08:53

Sounds like a UTI, my female cat had one a while ago. If you can get a sample of a bit of her wee in a little syringe, they can diagnose almost straight away and give you some antibiotics. I just emptied, cleaned and dried the cat little tray completely so that when she managed to do a tiny bit of wee I could take that to the vet - might be worth seeing if you can do that before you take her.

I wanted to get her diagnosed and on treatment ASAP, UTIs are awful for anyone and she seemed so fed up!

viccat · 16/11/2019 10:17

Sounds like cystitis.

For future reference, all vets provide out of hours cover 24/7 - most work with special out of hours hospitals such as Vets Now. Their website and answer phone will have the details.

SparePantsAndLego · 16/11/2019 21:29

How did you get on, OP?
