My beautiful cat has died.

My four year old cat was hit by a car last week. She was the most affectionate cat with such a kind, gentle nature. I've lost cats before but this has really hit me and I've been in tears most days.

The neighbours found her, wrapped her up and took her inside for which I am so grateful. I just feel so incredibly guilty for not putting her back inside the house before going out that day. She could still be here snuggled up to me right now. Does it get easier? I just feel sick and devastated.

Really sorry.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/11/2019 21:08

It does get better, it’s a risk we all run with outdoor cats. It’s really not your fault.

Esmerelda1988 · 12/11/2019 21:12

It does get easier, took a long time though. Lost a lovely 1 year old cat in the same circumstances. We keep our remaining cat in at night and when we aren't at home in the day now so might be worth doing if you have others to put your mind at rest. It's not your fault-cats love being outside and she'd have had lots of nice times out exploring, try to think of them Thanks

I’m so sorry. The death of a pet is awful. I still recall how much I sobbed and I mean shaking couldn’t talk sobbed when my hamster passed away. He was my best friend.
Xx.

Flowers I’m so sorry OP.
NonUrinatInVentum · 12/11/2019 21:54

Really sorry OP, it's so very hard to lose them.

Don't beat yourself up, there isn't anything you could do differently. Do you have a picture of her that you would like to share?

Vinorosso74 · 12/11/2019 22:36

So sorry Flowers It is horrible to lose a cat but please don't beat yourself up with what ifs.

Wolfiefan · 12/11/2019 22:43

I’m so so sorry. We lost a boy in similar circumstances. My last memory was seeing his face as he watched us drive away. But he was sitting in the sunshine and enjoying being a cat. That’ll have been his last memory. Happy.
Doesn’t mean I don’t still miss him though. Sad

I am so sorry sleepsuit. As fluffycloudland77 says, it is always a risk With outdoor cats, especially in the dark mornings and evenings. I am sure your cat loved you because you gave her a great quality of life, allowing her to go in and out as she wanted.

Elieza · 12/11/2019 22:56

Sorry for your loss. Everyone feels the same “if only I’d done x y x”.

It does get better. With time. Took me about four years. Flowers

Flowers

I lost a young cat the same way and it hurts so much. Un-mumsnetty hugs.

sleepsuit · 12/11/2019 23:01

Thank you everyone.

I'm glad she was found as if she had disappeared it would have been awful not knowing what happened to her. So I've got closure in that respect. I'm pretty sure she had a happy life, she adored being outside, always catching mice and birds. It was just taken from her far too soon. I really hope she didn't suffer. I'd only been out for an hour Sad

Flowers So sorry to hear this, sleepsuit.

TheWindowDonkey · 12/11/2019 23:32

Oh Sleepsuit, so sorry for you. There are some animals that you just click with, and when they go its devastating. She was lucky to have an owner who truly loved her. X

I am so sorry, it is so hard to loss a beloved cat, it is normal to grieve.

Kudukudu · 13/11/2019 14:19

Sleepsuit - I'm so very sorry. We lost our beloved 4 year old cat in an accident and I really thought I was going mad as my grief was so intense. I also felt responsible that he was outside when it happened and played over alternative scenarios again and again in my mind.

Friends suggested I should get another cat, but I didn't think I could ever bear to have another one. Two years down the line and my daughters persuaded me: we have a new rescue cat in the family and it really does help. So maybe in time, this might help you too.

Be kind to yourself. It is NOT your fault and her life, although too short, was happy and she was loved. Sending you strength and peace.

sleepsuit · 13/11/2019 16:52

@Kudukudu thank you, that really describes how I'm feeling!! I'll never say no to another cat, I absolutely adore the creatures, but it's definitely all too raw to think about at the moment. I feel so guilty and keep thinking about the what ifs. Trying to focus on the positives today and all the joy she brought to my life.

@sleepsuit you're the best type of cat owner, someone who really cares and loves their cat. Xx

Please continue to be a cat owner; perhaps discuss with an official cat rescue in your area that rehome like Celia Hammond in London and find the best type of cat to adopt for your environment ? Sometimes, cats are better adapted to being indoors.
