New spray problem! Help!

Colin is 3.5 yrs old, neutered. He’s never sprayed.
Last week I took him to the vet as he kept trying to do wees in his litter tray (which he NEVER uses incidentally- it’s just there for emergencies, like snow!!), he tried three or four times in about half an hour and only managed a tiny wee. He was also being bitey and a bit cross. So off to the emergency vet we went because I was worried he had a blockage. Anyway vet said his bladder was empty but maybe he had some kind of urinary stress thing , possibly caused by the fireworks?? Anyway she gave him an anti inflammatory injection and since then he’s had that every day plus feliway urinary stress tablets. He seems fine in himself and has been weeing outside as usual. So I thought all was well except I just got a text from my neighbour saying he can’t come in anymore as he’s spraying everywhere inside her house. Now it must be bad because she LOVES Colin and he spends all night every night in her bed! But not anymore it would appear. What’s going on?? Why is he doing this and how can I get him to stop? I hope he won’t start spraying inside OUR house 😬

Sorry I'm not much help but my cat seems to go through the exact same thing and our vet also put it down to stress. Most recently it happened after we had been on holiday (cat went to stay at MILs and got absolutely spoilt so not sure i believe it was stress on this occasion, he has been there many times before) and also happened after we moved house. Interested to see if anyone has any ideas on how to help this! Have tried feliway plugins etc but they dont have much effect on him. Hope your boy feels better soon!

Thank you. It’s such a pity as he sees next door as his home too. We joke we have a cat share, she basically has a free cat! Thinking about it, the neighbours on the other side are new, they’ve been there three or four weeks and the spraying may have started around the same time. O don’t think he goes in their house but he def goes into their garden. Then he comes back into our yard and I’ve seen him spraying our bin and their car! The weird weeing in the litter tray was a one off.

Perhaps I should give the vet another call in the morning. I didn’t realise the problem was ongoing. I’m loathe to spend another £100 at the vets tbh. Maybe I should get some feliway plug ins and try that first

Yeah I think you could be right about the new neighbours maybe throwing him off and making him a bit stressy. Do they have any pets? My cat also does pees which are really red when he's having a flare up. The vet put it down to stress causing crystallizations in his pee which is causing him pain and explains the weird pee. They also put him on a special diet (which cost a fortune!) and it was supposed to stop the crystallizations but he wouldnt eat it. I think its something you just need to keep an eye on and make him as comfortable as possible until it passes. I would try feliway and see how you get on, in my experience it does pass but flares up now and again and results in a trip to the vet for some pain medication

Hmm yes he has fancy food anyway, which already costs loads. He’s meant to be on a diet, but that’s not been going too well 😬 so we bought some food from vets which was diet plus urinary stress relief. Think it’s hills. He doesn’t really like it. Which may be the actual way he ends up losing weight! It’s weird eh because he certainly doesn’t SEEM stressed. So maybe he’s stressed at neighbour B’s garden then takes it out on neighbour A’s house?
Ew red pee? Your poor dcat 🙀

Yes this is exactly the same as mine, acts totally normal other than spraying and weird pee! Still lets us pick him up, eats fine, cuddles fine, completely unstressed in every way! Poor boys, i think some cats are just prone to it unfortunately Sad good luck with everything!

Thanks @DexCatsMam

You can try cystease, you mix it into the wet food.

Kenworthington · 12/11/2019 20:54

Ah I think that’s what we have. Is it feliway cystease? In capsules? That’s what we are using for a week, twice a day opened out and mixed into his food

Yes that’s right.
