Christmas tree and cats

This is our first Christmas as cat owners, we’ve two lovely cats that will be 9 months at Christmas. I’ve now started to consider how they’ll respond to a Christmas tree, is it inevitable that they’ll try to pull off the baubles and climb the tree??

Mine have always ostensibly ignored the tree, and they only ever have 12 days to play with it anyway (24th Dec to 6th Jan).
However, despite the cats apparently taking no interest in the tree, baubles always mysteriously go missing over Christmas and usually don't turn up until April.

Our kitten are 3 1/2 months ATM - nothing is safe in the house! They climb anything we let them.

I think I am going to get a pre-lit little one to pop on a side cupboard and a festive table cloth and centrepiece. I've also made a mental note to get load of LED candles.

Hoping for a cute photo of TC poised in a Christmas tree :).

Best I can do at the moment is Basil posing in front of a christmas tree a few years ago

Colin is never that bothered about trying to climb the tree, until we have taken all the stuff off it to take it down. I think because it then actually looks like a real tree?

Although just found this from last year... so, perhaps not...

One of my favourite memories at Christmas is the year we decided to have caramel chocolates on the tree.

3am one night DH shot out of bed convinced the cat had brought a mouse into the bed. Turned out she'd stolen a chocolate off the tree and he'd thought the string was a tail Grin still makes me laugh every time I remember

ColdRainAgain · 13/11/2019 21:42

Old cat only liked hiding under the tree.
I'm regretting ordering a real tree this year. I think our 2 new arrivals may think Christmas has come early......

I have 3 cats, and within an hour of the tree going up it looks like it has been decorated by someone on lsd. And beautifully decorated floors.

Tbf there's only one that actually climbs the tree and actually plays with decorations. One only wrecks it by trying to sharpen her claws on the trunk, and likes to adorn any wreaths on sideboards etc. The old boy just likes to sit on piles of decorations and look all pitiful so you don't dislodge him.

We just ensure decorations are safe as cat toys and never leave lights plugged in unless we're present. Plus one dc has a giant stocking that one cat is obsessed with getting in, so it has to be strategically placed.
