Please help me get my head around cat insurance

Our cat is a 5 month old domesticated long haired kitten.

I've been looking at getting insurance for him and there are so many our there that I find it quite daunting.

Please could you recommend what the best policy to get for a kitten? I'm not sure whether I need to go for as vet fees policy as he is relatively healthy and young. So should I get the cheapest one going? Are there any brands to avoid?

Thanks in advance.

I pay £75 a month for my pair. It went up massively at the last renewal so I'm
Dreading the next few years as Snorg is now 9. But each cardiologist visit is £600 ish.

Titchy , reckon he's got good handle on who pays out and who wriggles out. We had no end of problems with Asda. Couldn't give a flying fuck who underwrites them, they were cheap and their crap service reflected it. My idiot ex made a big mistake insuring with them.

So don't exactly know what your problem is but do fuck off.

Another vote for Petplan. I have two cats (brothers) and have insured them since they were 4 months old - they are 6 now. We have a lifetime policy with fees up to £7,000 and pay £36 per month. I think it has gone up about £2 per cat since we took out the policy. My vet is another one who heaves a sigh of relief when he finds out you are with Petplan.

Bit unecessary Hmm

I just pointed out that supermarket insurance is the same as normal insurance, not a dumbed down Basics range. Sainsbury's pet insurance used to be run by PetPlan for example. Same policy. Same call centre. Half the price.

Important thing to look for is Lifetime Cover which means that if your pet gets a long term illness, or an issue that is likely to repeat during the course of the animal's life, they will continue to get cover. The cheapest things have a limit per condition and then at the end of the year on the anniversary of when you got the policy, the illness becomes a "pre existing condition" and is excluded from future cover.

I don't know when that was but when my Mum had her dog insured with Sainsbury's they paid out without a problem but hiked the price by a massive amount the following year. Petplan have never done that when I've claimed for Harry

15 years ago, we used E&L (continued the cover our breeder had). They whacked up the premiums massively after we had to claim (cat was about 4 or 5), to the extent that we decided to self-insure.

I now have 2 kittens under Petplan and wondering what to do after the month is up.

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 13/11/2019 19:16

Direct line paid out no problem and I find them reasonable and the policy is clearly worded and easy to understand.

When we got our previous 2 cats we insured them but luckily in 17 years I only needed to claim a couple of times. The premiums though were through the roof as they were 16 and 17 years old when we lost them and from about 12 years old most companies won’t take you on as new clients as the likelihood is you are going to make some possible huge claims. Towards the end of his life when his litter sister had died the previous year my monthly premium was about £65 per month. I have now adopted 2 kittens and we have opened a separate bank account which we are paying in a set amount per month and that will only be used for big surgeries. Whenever I looked at making a claim previously it was normally a similar amount to the excess so rarely ever claimed . We are in a better financial position now then when we had our previous 2 do if one of our new babies was poorly we would probably manage ok
