Help! Kitten discipline!

How do you do it?! 4 month old is going into 2 dangerous places, behind the TV and on our hob, open plan house so no way of keeping her out of the room. We are removing her from the area and saying "No" quite firmly but she is going back straight away, removing and back, in a constant cycle. Any ideas gratefully received!

Get a little water spray bottle and quietly wait until she dies those things, then give her a quick squirt with the water. Try not to let her see you do it. She will start to associate those areas with a squirt of water.

Now, where’s the photos? 🥺

Wolfiefan · 02/11/2019 11:13

Hahahahahaha. Kittens and discipline. Grin
Why is behind the TV dangerous? You need to find a way to keep her away from the hob if it’s hot. Cats go where they want.

viccat · 02/11/2019 11:29

It would be better to make those areas safe as you can't guarantee your kitten won't go there.

Can you block behind the TV?

And maybe some kind of a safety cover for the hob?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/11/2019 11:31

Ours are banned from two areas -

Ultility because I don't want them going behind the washing machine
Pantry in case they decide to bring mice in .

Of course female cat takes huge umbrage at this and makes it her life's mission to gain access.

When I saw her sleek rump sticking out from beside the WM, the only thing I could do was tap her (tap not a smack ) and she reversed .

They don't recognise "risk"
We leave a cold pan on the cooker with an inch of water if the hob has been used . So the worst they'd get is a splash.

She's still a magnet to the pantry though Hmm

PuppyMonkey · 02/11/2019 11:34

Squirt of water is the only way.

fireplacetiles · 02/11/2019 12:06

Photo attachedSmileThe TV is dangerous because she is chewing the wires and swinging on it (its mounted in a set of shelves). I have a spray bottle, will try that and yes I realise "kitten and discipline" in the same sentence is nonsense!

On another topic I can't have a xmas tree this year can I? She will just climb it lol.

We're going for tree (fake prelit) with extra static lights (our boy likes to chase the laser pen) .
No baubles .

It might not work though !

EachandEveryone · 02/11/2019 12:40

I can’t see the photo. Mine have never been bothered by the tree. Try and avoid glass ornaments.

Wolfiefan · 02/11/2019 12:42

70isaLimit
I NEVER start the washing machine without checking inside!
We have a little door high tree that sits on the coffee table. Our other cats never bothered it but this pair rip chocs off, smash baubles, try and eat tinsel and climb it and tip the bugger over. Hmm
They are torties. Grin

There’s absolutely no point in having a Christmas tree UNLESS you have a cat. Just make sure it has a good weighted base so the tree doesn’t tip. I really miss the days of kittens climbing trees. ☹️ I had a wee darling that managed to flatten out some of the branches and make herself a bed. Visitors would remark on the tree then spot this little curled up cat in the middle of the branches.

Frangipane · 02/11/2019 12:51

Another one who is here for the photo. You can have a tree. A few years back, I had a kitten, born about the same time of year, so about 6 months old at Christmas. Yes, he climbed the tree, but the tree was well weighted and it didn't fall over. It made for some cute photos. A few lower baubles did get knocked off frequently, but that is part of the fun of having a kitten.

No idea how you stop a cat going anywhere it likes really. Mine get up on the side next to the hob and i fret about them burning their paws on hot rings, but somehow they seem to know to avoid them.

BovaryX · 02/11/2019 12:58

Hi,
What about getting her a climbing/scratching post with a place for her to sit on top? As a kind of distraction? It sounds like she likes to climb so if you get her some baskets and climbing posts it might discourage her from going on top of hob?

Wolfie yes I always poke about in our machine especially if I've had to leave it mid-load.
Ours can teleport through a closed door I swear Grin

A load of (especially black) washing and a jet black cat , the consequences don't bear thinking about Sad

Our female squidges herself between the machine and the wall but if she got down the back she would have room. I reckon she could get out but I don't want to test my theory!)
The drier is stacked on a shelf above so I don't fancy tryng to move that either .

Get her a cat tower. Ours loves hers!
