Why is my cat suddenly massively fat?

I’ve just got back from a two week holiday. While I was away my dm was staying at my house and looking after dcat. Cat is nearly 1, half Maine Coon (so fairly big breed) and usually has a pouch for breakfast and a pouch mid afternoon as well as a bowl of biscuits that are out all the time. He normally eats his almost all of his pouches straight and he munches through about a third of the biscuits throughout the day. Normally I let him out in the morning and he stays outside perfectly happily until mid afternoon when he comes in, has his tea and sleeps, follows me around, has cuddles and goes off on very important cat duties around the house.

As it’s been bad weather here for the last fortnight my dm said that he refused to go out. She said he was busy inside, not just lying around but wouldn’t even consider going out to the shed where he’s got a bed, toys and a litter tray. He was also eating his breakfast pouch and immediately finishing all his biscuits for the day, then following dm around crying for more food. She asked me and I said to give him another bowl of biscuits which he was then polishing off as well but still seemed hungry. I thought he might have had worms so dm gave him a worming tablet and flea treatment but he still spent the rest of the time I was away refusing to go out and starving.

When I got back on Sunday I got a shock as he is absolutely massive! He looks like a cartoon cat he’s so fat. I thought maybe it was his first proper winter coat coming through. I’ve given him a good go over with a Furminator and he’s still just a complete porker. Advice online seems to be to give him more exercise but he still won’t go out and isn’t really one for games. He just looks at me in disgust if I try to get him to play with a laser or a ball.

Any suggestions? Would the vet laugh me out of the building if I bring my cat in because he’s fat? Do cats sometimes have a big growth spurt just before they turn one or when they approach their first winter? 🤞 😬

We have a half Maine Coon and he does exactly this every year in October. Almost overnight it looks like he doubles in size. Just bigger and fluffier everywhere. Then come March he shrinks again! If he has to visit the vets over the winter we are always told to watch his weight etc etc but we now know he drops it all in the Spring (unlike his owner Grin) Enjoy the extra bits to cuddle!

I have nothing helpful to add, just a heartfelt request for a photo of the cuddly adorableness.

I dont think it takes much for a cat with those genes to expand! I've got a Norwegian forest cat and she floofs out and puts on weight when winter sets in. She gets skinny in summer because she spends most of the day out in the woods, and her coat thins. I think her winter weight gain might be part of her genetics rather than a reduction in activity though. She has constant access to dry food and will partially eat one or two small pouches p/d but she does go through phases of binging on dry food so I have to restrict it. Your cat might have been a bit bored while you were away and ate more dry food? I would have thought a larger cat would eat about three pouches spread throughout the day with maybe some dry food through the night, maybe you could adjust the food schedule rather than reduce the amount, or increase pouch food if it's got good protein content and reduce dry? Mooching burns calories!

And we have to see a photo.

I'm here for the photo. Love MCs!

Ime due to kindly neighbours...... We have 2 and 1 has always been huge compared to his db. Now they are both fat!!
Wish neighbour wore nicer perfume though - they stink!!

WaningGibbous · 30/10/2019 14:28

My ordinary cat seems to think double rations are in order as soon as it drops below 18 degrees outside. The vet disagrees but doesn't have to live with the constant whinging and tripping up and the sight of the poor starving cat lying distraught in front of his empty bowl.

Could it be worms?

NonUrinatInVentum · 30/10/2019 14:31

My cats do this in October/November. They are building up their fat stores for the winter when, in the wild, they would have had much less access to food. They drop it all in the spring Grin

flashingbeacon · 30/10/2019 14:45

My cats suddenly get starving the minute anyone different is looking after them. Particularly if they can sense the other person is a soft touch. My DJ feels they are going to “turn on her” so heads immediately for the dreamies. The one time they went to a cattery they shamed me by sharing the work experience kids sandwiches.

Cats.

LadyFatCat · 30/10/2019 14:49

As requested one fat, miserable kitten Grin.

Thanks so much for all the info - I hadn’t considered that he might be fattening himself up for winter. He’s been deeply unimpressed at all the weather conditions that he’s been presented with so far in his life. He meows at the sky when it’s anything other than cloudy but warm

Yeah he's getting ready for hibernation
Mine was screaming at me angrily about the weather today Hmm whilst eating two breakfasts

theemmadilemma · 30/10/2019 14:54

My big boy (RIP) always got much fatter in Winter, but that was through lack of going out, not extra food.

The sudden increase in appetite might make me get him checked over just in case.

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/10/2019 19:43

I bet he’s having a growth spurt. Mc mature later than moggies.

EllenRipley · 01/11/2019 22:49

He is gorgeous. And suits his extra chunkiness 😆

SirVixofVixHall · 01/11/2019 22:53

Oh I love him. What a beautiful cat. He is absolutely gorgeous.

Boysey45 · 02/11/2019 20:35

Hes beautiful and not that big. You can get satiety control biscuits by Royal Canin which are supposed to fill them up more as they have a higher protein content.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 02/11/2019 21:32

We have been away for two weeks and Fat Cat appears to have blown up like a puffer fish!

Deathraystare · 03/11/2019 19:26

Can't help you, but when my Nan fed our cats when we were away, she of course overfed them. Why not? she over fed us too on occasions! It was really funny seeing two cats trying to look half starved when in actual fact they had been over fed!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 03/11/2019 19:33

My cat has been in the Cattery for a week and came back fat.

JenniferM1989 · 03/11/2019 19:38

Mine is the same. I think it's the weather changing and them not having as many adventures but still eating the same amount. I give two pouches a day as well, morning and around 5pm and leave a full bowl of biscuits and water out. He eats about half the bowl of biscuits and of course gets treats once a day as well. He was average I would say then October hit and now he's a right fatty!
