6 month old kittens throwing up after eating

Had them for 4 months, brother and sister, both neutered.

For the last couple of days they’ve been chucking up their food within half an hour of eating. The food is pretty much ‘intact’. No sign of being poorly, they’re tearing round the house after eachother non stop as usual (which I doubt helps, esp straight after eating!)

Should I change their food to a ‘tummy gentle’ one for a while, feed smaller portions, or be worried and visit the vets?

They also often try and eat it afterwards which is making ME feel sick (especially as I’m off work unwell at the moment) Confused

Is it the same food as usual? Dry or wet? I'd maybe put less out at a time and try little and often

Youngatheart00 · 30/10/2019 12:06

It’s broadly the same, whiskers kitten, tho it is the meat rather than fish one. That said, it also happened with biscuits.

One of mine (adult) has spells of throwing up intact biscuits the same way. No idea why, she gets over it with no changes. (Doesn’t try to re-eat it though, ew)

2 doing it at once is a bit odd but I’d just keep giving them the same stuff for a bit before making changes.

Heard a raised bowl might help so I’ll try that. They do wolf the food down, not sure how to encourage them to eat more slowly. Small portions it is for now, thank you.

Biscuits are in a raised bowl here Confused

dementedpixie · 30/10/2019 13:59

I would maybe try phasing in a better kitten food. Whiskas dry has cereals as a first ingredient whereas cats are carnivores and should avoid cereals/grains. Some cats can be intolerant of them too

penisbeakers · 30/10/2019 14:01

You need a grain free kibble like applaws or the like. Whiskas food is so bad for them. Raised bowl, plenty of water on hand.

Youngatheart00 · 30/10/2019 14:23

Thank you, will make a change

Where do you store the cat food ? Try and keep it at room temperature. I know someone who kept the cat food in an old fashioned pantry not in the kitchen. This mean the cat food was always cold. Not just room temperature.

The cat threw up after eating. Having the cat food at room temperature seemed to fix that.

MiniMum97 · 30/10/2019 17:20

My two did this. We switched to grain free food and they were fine.

Youngatheart00 · 30/10/2019 18:18

Cat food is stored at room temp, so can’t be that.

Got some grain free, (extortionately priced!) Wet food and let them share a packet, From a new raised bowl - hey presto no vomming!

Just a warning; you're supposed to phase new food in gradually

SleepyKat · 30/10/2019 18:35

I’ve seen slow feed bowls where they’re all bobbly to make it harder to pick the food up. Never tried it though but maybe worth a go.

My cat used to do this with felix and whiskas Wet food and go kat biscuits but when we swapped to Iams biscuits it stopped. So I suspect some cats can’t tolerate cheap food.

Youngatheart00 · 30/10/2019 18:37

@dementedpixie yes I thought about this, but given the whiskers seems to be having such a bad reaction, I thought better to move to a small portion of the better quality food. Which is advertised as being gentle on the stomach. Fingers crossed no ill effects (several hours without vom!)

Sounds like you have sorted the problem but in case anyone is reading and interested in the slow feed bowls, I was recommended this for one of my cats who is very overweight and scoffs his food and then muscles in on the other cats' plates. He doesn't have a vomiting problem incidentally, just is very fat and greedy. Anyway, the slow feed bowl (I bought one on Amazon) is very effective at slowing him down, so much so that he is now usually the last to finish, instead of the first. So I would thoroughly recommend slow feed bowls if anyone is thinking about getting one for any reason.
