Itchy cat not fleas!

DCat is getting balder by the day. He is over grooming his tummy and legs underneath so much that it’s just skin there now.

He had a steroid injection and it seemed to be growing back but the vet says it’s not something they can do on a regular basis. They will test for allergies but say that even if they know what’s causing the problem it is probably something he just has to live with as sometimes there is no cure or effects if meds are worse than the problem. He doesn’t appear to have any scabs or skin damage.

Does anyone give their cat anti histamine regularly for this issue. He must be uncomfortable though the vet says over grooming can be habit forming too.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

We've just adopted a rescue who has allergies. Not entirely sure what to (CP said they don't test because it's too expensive) but she's on Hills Z/D food which is hypo allergenic, plus a daily steroid tablet. Our vet is hoping to reduce the steroid dose after a couple of weeks once cat has settled.

Did your vet suggest changing food? Or are you waiting for allergy tests to come back first?

@DropZoneOne. Daily steroid tablets? They sound interesting. The vet gave ours an injection to last a month but said she wasn’t happy to do it regularly, I’ll ask about tablets. The vet said we could test for allergies which would cost about £400 but that even if we knew what it was there was probably no treatment that would work and that usually they leave it unless the cat is causing injury as well as losing fur.

Any changes to his world recently? Is he neutered and what is he fed on?
We had a girl who had a flea allergy. One bite and we saw the reaction. What are you using to prevent fleas?
Worth ditching as many scents and chemicals at home as you can. And maybe try feliway? (Not cheap but can’t hurt!)

Yes he’s neutered and treated monthly with flea treatment from the vets.

We lost our dog 10 months ago and this has definitely unsettled him. We have a feliway plug in. Not sure it does anything really but I feel better for trying.

Could it be related to losing the dog? Could other cats be encroaching on his garden now?
If the flea stuff is frontline then it’s crap!!
