Is a squirrel diet bad for a cat?

We can't stop the cat killing and eating squirrels.
We've tried everything - he's locked in at night, wears bells, there are cat deterrent spikes along the tops of the fences where he hunts.
Nothing has made a difference.
He's miserable if locked in all day so can come and go via the cat flap.

He's averaging 2-4 a week. He's also started to hide the carcasses and go back to them (gross!).
He'd up to date on flea/worm treatment but surely this can't be good for him??

sorry for asking the obvious question .... are you feeding him enough good cat food?

if his flea/worm treatment is up to date, i wouldn't have thought it would be bad for him....

What exactly do you think cats eat naturally? Tins of whiskas? Hmm

Fluffycloudland77 · 29/10/2019 09:35

I’d take th spikes off, sounds like a vets bill waiting to happen.

The cat is overweight (according to the vet, who advised us on which dry cat food to feed him and in what portions) so we're wary of feeding him more.

The cat 'spikes' are blunted plastic ones designed to be safe (and not much of a deterrent as both the cat and the squirrels still trot over them quite happily!).

Might squirrels carry diseases (like rats)??

Think the cat might be part Bengal....he's huge and very predatory with other animals. He even took a fox on!

ach, he'll self limit...there's only so many squirrels to go around.

so long as it's greys and not reds, he's doing the local woods a favour.

Bloody hell. That's one tough cat you have there. Squirrels are vicious little bastards and can do a cat serious damage if they get on the wrong side of those teeth. Gladiator kitty!

Photo? (Cat, not deceased squirrel).

I have removed a squirrel's head that was blocking a cat's intestines so they are not the best diet!

Lone - Shock
This is why we were worried....he eats the heads mostly, skull and all...

Can't post a pic, think because of privacy settings on my phone.
Imagine a slightly smaller tabby coloured lynx.

For once I am relieved that DCat just brings us grey squirrels very much alive rather than dead...
