Male or Female Kitten

I am being embarrassingly indecisive here - thought I had decided on a male kitten but my best cat ever was female and the female kitten from this litter is very pretty. Male is currently reserved but I want to change my mind.

No particular reason for posting tbh Blush, apart from being embarrassed to make the phone call.

Yes, it’s just a cat, just like my animals that I took to live on another continent and back again we’re ‘just animals’.

The op is travelling next summer. Not as soon as she gets it.

Ah ok so your friend is a get and is happy to look after your cat. That's a bit different. I would go ahead and get one then. A boy definitely a boy. 😊. I still couldn't leave my cat for 8 weeks. I'm a wuss, I cried when I left him for four days the other year and phoned every day to see if he was ok.

I've just got my 2nd boy kitten. They are 17 and 13 weeks now. Never had makes before but they are lovely

Older female cat acts like we are lodgers in the house that should be treated with disdain

FloraFoxton · 30/10/2019 11:21

@RedJoan I don't recognise many names either but for some reason I always spot @Wolfiefan because she writes some bizarre judgemental nonsense from time to time. She's been told too but probably not enough times to dial it down a bit

Nothing wrong with what you have planned. Nothing at all.

GiantKitten · 30/10/2019 11:24

I’ve got 1 boy & 2 girls. The boy is the most attached & demonstrative, but 1 of the girls is also a lap cat, & the other likes to sit right next to me.

Boycat is much bigger & throws his weight around (literally) rather. His “pet name” is “PIG!”

We used to have another girl but she decided she didn’t like the others any more & left home. We managed to find her a new only-cat home but still miss her - she was a great character. I’d go for another girl like a shot Smile

None of mine like being picked up btw

nearlyfinished1moreyear · 30/10/2019 11:27

I've got 2 of each. My females are very independent and only come to me but I'm guessing that's because I feed them lol. My males are loving, very laid back and like a good snuggle.

Cailleach1 · 30/10/2019 14:07

I have one of each. litter mates. And I am shocked about the poor press girls are getting on this thread. I adore both of them (and we'll never have a mouse problem again). However, my girl got the brains. She doesn't pick a fight with everything passing. More likely to find little places to hide and settle down. They will both be neutered, I presume.

If girls are harder to home, I'd get a girl. I have had a few boys before and they are all different.

MrsWonderland · 30/10/2019 14:14

This thread is making me nervous! We are really hoping for an affectionate kitty for our first cat experience and were looking for a boy.

However, in the event we fell for a female ginger kitten who we are picking up in 48 hours. Please tell me there's still hope we might have a snuggly affectionate female!!

Cailleach1 · 30/10/2019 14:18

My girl spent an hour on me this morning to warm up . She does that 'making biscuits' on me too. It is just she has to go about her own little life too.

Wolfiefan · 30/10/2019 15:16

@FloraFoxton but your opinion doesn’t matter. The cat does. My old pair would’ve been fine. The two rescue kitties we have now would have found a way to leave. They need us.

recklessruby · 30/10/2019 15:41

I have a female cat. She loves cuddles and sleeps with me every night. She follows me around the house and garden and occasionally i get a gift (mouse).
She is 2 and i left her for 3 weeks with my son and daughter here at home and during the last week i was away she was unhappy and fussy with food, yowling and didnt want to come in.
When i got back within seconds she was on the back step.
They do form a bond with their main carer i have had her since 7 months.
Also in my absence nothing changed with her care. She just got a bit miserable. Girls are lovely cats.

loriat · 30/10/2019 15:45

We have had three female cats over the years and currently have a male, all with very different natures. One of our females was very affectionate and loved cuddles, the other two were more stand offish. Our boy is very loving but he's still young so that could change as he gets older.

VivienScott · 30/10/2019 16:10

Always preferred male cats

Cailleach1 · 30/10/2019 20:58

My two just popped back in. I let them out for a while after supper. It was my girl who jumped on the sofa for cuddles with me while monsieur toddled off.

viccat · 31/10/2019 08:32

I have two of each and they are all affectionate in their own way. The boys are a bit more "flop on your lap and snooze for two hours" types while the girls are a bit more skittish and independent but still want a fuss and, the younger does sometimes sleep on me (more to steal my body warmth than anything else, I suspect!).

MrsWonderland · 01/11/2019 21:25

I posted on this thread previously to say I was getting anxious reading the comments as I'd wanted a boy but we'd fallen for a gorgeous girl. Picked our kitten up this morning and took it straight to the vet. Turns out they are 99% certain it's boy after all. 😂

Gingaaarghpussy · 01/11/2019 21:58

Well surely, it's what kitten appeals to you?
I've had boys and girls, depending on how they 'felt' when I interacted with them.
I currently have a female purely because, when she was tiny, I picked her up and she cuddled under my chin.
It's the personality that matters, as far as I'm concerned.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 02/11/2019 00:26

In my experience male cats are almost always friendlier and more 'in your face' than females.
However...
because the females are harder work I do find I appreciate it more when they do deign to be friendly Grin.

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 04/11/2019 01:15

I grew up with males but the first cat I had as an adult was a girl and the boys were all lovely but I have to say my girl has been the best cat Iv ever known.

She was independent enough so she didn't feel like work all the time but really affectionate too. Always on my knee or sleeping next to me on the bed. She was smaller so lighter in the box going to the vet etc. Her playing was more gentle which meant not too much claws or teeth and her kittenhood wasn't quite so crazy. Oh and her poo in the tray doesn't nearly smell as bad as any of the boys Iv had!
She's old now so things are slightly different due to some health issues.

Now all of that could quite simply be down to luck and her sweet personality rather than her being a female obviously but that been my experience.
