Help, anyone experienced this? Tail trap, bladder damage

Hi, we have a 7 month old kitten, took her to the vets Monday with suspected abcess, has turned out today after returning when we found that she had been leaking urine that actually she's had her tail trapped somehow, it's detached from her spine, causing damage to the nerves, meaning she's leaking urine, as her brain isn't getting the signals to urinate. Also lost some sphincter control.
Vet has said she's not in pain. She's at the emergency vet overnight currently, with pain relief and to see if bloods come back with any info about her kidneys.
I just don't know what to do.
She's fine in herself, eating, happy, purring.
Options are: give her a bladder squeeze every day, to get her to urinate, in the hopes that in weeks/months she might then get nerve feeling back, which could then be her back to normal. Then eventually amputate the tail. I'd be willing to try for a bit, but we both work, full time, busy lives, plus I can't see how I'd get hold of her every day regularly enough to do it, she's an outdoor a lot of the day cat, plus not very friendly, can be difficult to get hold of. Plus the vet did try, but said she didn't go as he would expect, which is not a good sign.
Or, leave her be, let her leak, not an option really, as it would be everywhere. Have children, plus big house with lots of hiding places, just wouldn't be practical.
Thurs option, Have her put to sleep.

Currently she's there overnight for bloods, he's going to check kidneys. If kidneys infected, then bad news, but could be given fluids, antibiotics etc.
If all clear, and he can get her to urinate after some pain relief to relax her, then possibly could wait and see and try keeping her home for a while to see.
Or, she has pain relief and we go in, with children, see her in the morning, have her put to sleep once they've said goodbye.

I just don't know what to do! She's so happy in herself. But the thought of having to get her to urinate every day, seems cruel, although he said it's not painful, she didn't react well to it this evening.
But then to not try seems cruel too. Children will be devastated, we lost our other lovely cat this time last year, the two kittens were to replace her, only had them 5 months.
