Which litter?

Another question from a novice kitten to be owner!

Kitten has been litter trained with Sainsburys basic litter.

I'd like to use a clumping one so I know what actually needs to be taken out, one that holds smells as best as possible, and preferably can be flushed.

Don't want to spend a fortune but happy to pay mid price for a good litter. Thoughts???

Also don't want to confuse the poor boy, so presume Sainsburys basic gradually mixed with whatever my new choice is??

Help! Thanks!

So you dont have the kitten yet? Keep the same litter to start with and then you can gradually change over. Dont think clumping clay litter is advised with kittens in case they eat it. Some Eco clumping stuff seems to be ok as they are plant based. Cats best oko plus clumps but tracks badly. Worlds best is better with tracking but is expensive. Haven't tried the catsan natural clumping stuff

Nope not got him yet, next weekend so I'm stocking up today.

Cats best is great at clumping and keeping smells down but the tracking is annoying! Our lad mostly goes outside so tray is just for overnight/if we're out.
Catsan and clay type litters are awful in my opinion as they keep the smell. The wood pellets (unperfumed) are good for keeping smells at bay but don't clump.
I don't flush any litter as I'm not convincing the sewerage system is up to it.

*convinced

We have tried clumping, clay and wood. My cat hates clumping and refuses to bury her poop if we use that. She isn't too keen on wood. The only one she seems to like is catsan non-clumping. Your cat will probably pick for you.

cherryblossomgin · 20/10/2019 10:40

Also I wouldn't flush it. Even the flushable ones can clog the system. DH once put litter down the toilet and it stayed at the bottom until I fished it out. We get bio degradeable dog bags and use them to clean out and tray. I dispose of them in the wheely bin.

dementedpixie · 20/10/2019 10:42

Catsan do a natural clumping as well as the clay type ones. Catsan white clay one smells really quickly.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 20/10/2019 10:44

We use Oko plus. It keeps smells in well and is compostable. It says that it’s flushable but I don’t do that and I think that there are reasons that it’s not a wise idea.
It does track though so we have a shallow plastic container with some of that non slip matting in front to trap as much as possible.

Catsan smells horrid.

Mia184 · 20/10/2019 13:20

I used Öko Plus as well for a while but changed because the clumping all of a sudden wasn't good anymore. I used World's Best for a while which is outstanding (great clumping, no smells whatsoever) but very expensive - I am in Germany, so it might be cheaper in Britain. I currently use a clay one but it doesn't eliminate the smell so I will go back to World's Best.

goldpendant · 20/10/2019 20:11

Thanks so much, all really helpful!

I'll try a non flushable clumping type then, thanks. Will try worlds best and see if there's a smell. How many bags would you get through on average a month?

With clumping you dont need to change it as often as non clumping. You scoop out pee and poo and top up with fresh stuff

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 20/10/2019 20:33

Sainsbury's clumping litter is very good.

goldpendant · 20/10/2019 21:09

Okay maybe I'll stick with the cheap Sainsburys then gradually onto their clumping and see how we do with smells...

Thanks all!

Oh, and covered tray or not??

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 20/10/2019 21:14

I have a high sided tray rather than a covered one

goldpendant · 20/10/2019 21:24

Thanks @dementedpixie been deliberating for so long over litter and tray, so ridiculous! Thanks!
