I think we are in trouble here...

Not sure what I want from this but opinions are welcome.

Sparklingcat is about 13/14, we don't know for sure but not far off. She has had an overactive thyroid for 2 years that is controlled with meds, also she is on meds for her kidneys. But everything was stable.

Last week she started with a limp (front leg), she was weight bearing and the vet said possibly a scuffle in the garden, pulled something maybe.
Limp gets worse over the weekend and yesterday she had an Xray (there was talk of possible arthiritis or tumours) which was inconclusive other than her elbows are that of an old cat. No fractures etc. Discharged with Gapapentin and Metacam last night. She was given long lasting antibiotics and painkillers by injection before she left.
There is absolutely no change, she is now not weight bearing on that leg and is just sleeping. She doesn't want cuddles and is sleeping in odd places.
We are due back at the vets Saturday morning. There is talk of MRI scans and starting on steroids.
I have no clue what we are dealing with but given her age, her other conditions and her not being herself what would you do?

Sad

Hoping it's something minor @Sparklingbrook. I only mentioned the paw because our old cat suddenly started limping and we thought leg injury. Vet found a tiny but very sharp stone between his toes which was poking into his foot when he put it down.

Has she had a blood test this week? If not, I'd definitely ask for one to rule out her kidneys. Don't want to worry you but cats are well known for wobbly legs, limps as their kidneys fail. Kidney disease can progress very quickly when it wants and my boy couldn't weight bear on one of his front legs in particular the last week.

Luckily kidneys although she’s on the
medication are fine. I was actually expecting the kidneys to be part of the problem.
She’s not a ‘well’ cat with her issues but was bumbling along happily until this.
I am going to inspect that paw later

Glad kidneys have been ruled out.

Fingers crossed the medication kicks in soon.

Back from the vets. She is starting very tentatively to put weight on the leg. She has been very alert all morning and wanted a fuss so that's good. She came back and had a good wash, and a bowl of food.
Vet has given her a steroid injection and we are to continue with Gabapentin. Back again on Monday.
I am trying not to get too excited but baby steps and all that.

That's good to hear, she's doing all the right kind of things by the sound of it. Hope she continues to improve.

Sparklingbrook · 19/10/2019 14:28

She is now sleeping in her usual spot too, not behind the TV.

Animals! Why do we have them? Such a worry.

That's good news so far, hopefully she's turned the corner and will be back to usual soon

She could well have pulled a tendon or a ligament and that is not visible on an xray only on ultrasound and it's more than likely that it will heal slowly on its own.
Lying in strange places is common if a cat is in pain.
Have you checked her paw for something stuck in there.
If the leg is infected it will be hot and swollen and you would be able to detect that.

Sparklingbrook · 19/10/2019 20:09

I think something pulled is quite likely. I have checked and checked her paw, she is quite happy for me to touch it and inspect it thoroughly. Not hot or swollen anywhere and although her body temperature was a little raised-nothing major.

I am willing her to get better. Vets again on Monday.

Keeping everything crossed for a full recovery. Animals are both the best stress relievers and the highest cause of stress in any pet owner's life.

Sparklingbrook · 21/10/2019 09:20

Off to the vets shortly. I think the Gapapentin is upsetting her stomach now (plus reading up it says it could cause lethargy). She seems to be putting weight on the paw every now and again and is starting to sleep in normal places.

It's a different vet today so we'll see, but I am all out of suggestions and don't want to do anything other than watch and wait at the moment. Sad

She has to have more XRays. They think it's her shoulder, the XRays last week were of her elbow.
