How much do you feed your cat everyday?

A discussion is currently going on in our house about this. We have looked online and get various answers. We have 4 adult cats (2 younger, 2 older - 2 larger sized). My ds will pour out a whole sachet each for 1 cat claiming that that is why they are made. I think that is over feeding mainly because they can always 'ask' if they want more. I tend to share a sachet between 2 cats so I give 1/2 sachet each. (By the way, we do buy tins as well for so many cats but get sachets as my teenagers are more likely to feed the poor cats after school this way!) It is difficult to monitor with 4 cats tbh - but our vet has told us to keep an eye on the weight of the eldest cat.

It should say on the packet how much to feed them.

mrsjackrussell · 13/10/2019 12:28

We just go by the cats weight. She's hungry all the time and would just keep eating.

Atm she is having 2 sachets a day but if she started to put on weight we would cut it down a little bit. If she had her way she would eat ten a day. Grin

2 sachets a day and access to some dry during the day, and a water fountain. 3 sachets made her near overweight

Mine has the metabolism I've always wanted Envy
He has anything from 2-5 pouches a day plus a full bowl of dry food. All grain free, high meat content

AnnaMagnani · 13/10/2019 12:34

I feel like insisting "But she's fluffy not fat!" to the vet but unfortunately she has weighed her, so I can't con her.

I tried 'She eats too much' with my vet.

Vet drily countered with 'No, you feed her too much.'

Well, there was no arguing with that and portions got weighed after that - and a smaller, more energetic cat ensued.

ArthurtheCatsHumanSlave · 13/10/2019 12:37

Gosh - Arthur is quite glutton compared to all your kitties.

He eats anything up to 6 Blush sachets of Felix a day, plus he has a full bowl of Iams topped up once a day. He also eats all our meaty leftovers, plus out of date meats and prawns from the fridge. If we don't feed him enough he supplements with a mouse (or two) a day.

He is 5 years old, and big and chunky, he sleeps all day, but is out all night, and is 4.5Kgs. Vet thinks he's perfect.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 13/10/2019 12:47

4 cats - usually about 12 sachets per day between them plus munchies
I put two sachets down whenever their bowls are empty - they self regulate Grin
One big (but not fat) cat at 5.5kg one small female 4kg and our two boy youngsters (20 months) who are tiny at 3.5kg each.
All are active outdoor cats.

Mind you my first cat who was a complete tom cat (and built like a brick shithouse) used to get through 3 large tins a day...

Use this to see if your cat is overweight OP

It says 3-4 sachets a day on the felix website so 1 and a half a day is way below this - but we do give a few crunchies, but as I said a small bowl between 4 cats whilst at work. The vet said she is heading up towards overweight, do be careful. It is the 'be careful' that is confusing me. If I knew for sure what to give I would give it, but the internet gives confusing messages.

Clankboing If your chonky cat goes out, is it possible she's helping herself to food elsewhere? Especially if the others are a healthy weight...

Clankboing · 13/10/2019 13:45

Yes @viccat, it is a possibility. She is very beautiful looking and a people cat, and the next door but one neighbours are a kind old couple who love our cats ... She (the cat) is also an amazing hunter but I can't see that that could add weight ... But maybe a combination of factors could.

@ArthurtheCatsHumanSlave mine is like that minus the hunting (friends, not food!)
He happily ate 150g turkey mince (raw) and then announced he was still a bit peckish Hmm
He's 3.4kg....

DirtyWindow · 13/10/2019 14:33

It's a pain in the arse but you really need to look at the instructions for each type of feed that you use and work it out based on the cat's weight (or ideal weight) and activity level. The difficult maths comes when you mix food brands/types but it is possible. No one can say whether half a pouch of Felix 3x day is enough/too much when we don't know what you cat weighs or how many grams of "crunchies" you are feeding.

I would also recommend ZooPlus for reasonably priced decent quality food.

DirtyWindow · 13/10/2019 14:35

You can also get food trays that open for each cat using their microchip if you want to control what each are eating individually.

chocodrops · 13/10/2019 16:25

Our two are both 6yo. They have 1 sachet between them 2x a day and dry food available pretty much all the time as well as fresh water. They just had their annual check up and both are doing well, complimented on physique by the vet.

Could it be that your chunk is eating more than her share of the food left for all 4 cats?

FenellaVelour · 13/10/2019 17:06

Ours have half a tin of Applaws each daily, plus Royal Canin Light dry food, which one of them really resents me for.
