Does your cat have a memory?

cubed123 · 13/10/2019 09:05

Does your dcat do anything that shows you it remembers things? Or do you think your dcat has no memory?

My dcat wakes me each morning at about 5:30 meowing for food, this isn’t a problem as I have to get up for work anyway.
As it’s the weekend I woke earlier, fed her and promptly went back to bed. She heard me stirring about 8am and cane asking for food again which makes me think she’s forgotten (or is she just hoping that I forgot?) Grin

My cat will meow at places she can’t get into (eg understairs cupboard). When I open the door she will dive in and come out with some toy she played with yesterday for example.

I like to think of her suddenly ‘remembering’ where that toy is, and asking me to help her retrieve it Grin

Lweji · 13/10/2019 09:09

I don't think it's a memory problem.
They tend to react to triggers. You stirring is a sign food is about to come. And she must have been a bit peckish by then.
My cat is known to trick us into giving him extra food, but usually not the same person who gave it first. He knows...

ScreamingValenta · 13/10/2019 09:11

My two cats definitely have a memory, and incredible hearing (when it suits them).

Whenever I open the drawer where the Dreamies are kept, they will arrive within seconds from any room in the house!

verytiredandstressed · 13/10/2019 09:13

I'm the only one who feeds the cat now as often my dh or dd would feed her if she miaows but then when I come home maybe 1/2 a hour later she would again miaow to be fed . Also say if I go out she will expect to be fed even if it's a hour later . I don't think cats have any concept of time , it's just that when I come home she knows I will feed her .

madcatladyforever · 13/10/2019 09:15

Nah the cat is just trying g it on because you are there. My 18 year old cat asks me for food everytime I go into the kitchen because she loves food and would happily eat all day.
She recognises people she likes even after she hasn't seen them for a year and rushes up to them making a terrific fuss but ignores people she doesn't know.
She knows what time I get home from work andone is always waiting by the door..
She definitely does remember things.

ScreamingValenta · 13/10/2019 09:17

Not a cat, but it seems lambs have a good visual memory!

Your cat is definitely trying it on 🤣

Cats definitely remember. Ivy used to happily visit the vets for injections and check ups, jump out of her box and rub against the vet! Then had a very scary health issue where she was hospitalised for 12 days with lots of needles, drips and scary stuff. Now when she goes for a checkup you can't even get her out of the box! She definitely remembers what's happened there.

Helga remembers every single slight, every time I forgot something, bought the wrong flavour food, moved her off my knee, didn't respond within 3 secs etc. etc.

She remembers. I see it in her eyes. I feel her disdain.

Freyja has the memory of a teaspoon.

I like Freyja Grin

cubed123 · 13/10/2019 09:23

Hmm Lweji you’re probably right.
After a while she was looking at me so pitifully I gave in and gave her a little more. Next time I’ll make sure I feed her later.

That’s really impressive Fettuccine

Your post made me laugh Screaming- so typical

My cat has a memory, if I brush her she falls out with me for two days. She also brings out a toy at night that is noisy, (a bird that tweets when she moves it) we have no idea where she hides it. My cat also does the more food meow if my DH has fed her when I was asleep. I have to phone him and check.

Gumbo · 13/10/2019 09:35

My cat is currently sitting near the door and eyeing me with suspicion...and every time I move he hurtles out of the cat flap into the driving rain - because he's been to the vet (including once for surgery) 3 times this week. There's no question he remembers and associates mornings with being manhandled into a cat carrier. Not sure how long he'll remember it though...hopefully by Christmas he'll be back on my lap Smile

Toddlerteaplease · 13/10/2019 09:38

I was gobsmacked when I saw The late Fatty watch me throw something away, and a few days later I came home to a knocked over bin and she was playing with said item. I caught her doing it several times afterwards. She wasn't very bright, so I was amazed!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 13/10/2019 09:47

They generally remember:

  • the sound of the fridge door
  • mealtimes
  • how to do things they shouldn't
  • where their favourite sleeping spots are
  • where the food is served
  • who they like and don't like
  • going to the V.E.T.

They generally don't remember

  • any instruction along the lines of 'no', 'don't' and 'down'
  • being fed 5 seconds ago.
cubed123 · 13/10/2019 09:47

.... awww so many clever cats.
This is the said culprit now asleep herself, I’ve got a good mind to turn the tables and wake her.

Lots of pretty black and whites on here today! Here's my naughty little vet hater.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 13/10/2019 10:25

Poor Ivy! Is it any wonder she is terrified of the vet? Little love! I know your posts are lighthearted but I just wanted to empathise with her.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/10/2019 10:32

Omg @cricketmum84 she is sooooo cute!

cricketmum84 · 13/10/2019 10:33

@YetAnotherSpartacus I know the poor little thing. We came very very close to losing her.

I don't think I would want to go back to a hospital either if I had gone through what she went through!

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/10/2019 16:44

When my cat was a kitten we were playing a game of throw the ball up the stairs and wait for it to roll down, fine with a ping pong but we used one of those dense rubber balls once and it bounced down & smacked him right between the eyes.

10 years later we still play the game but as it nears he pulls his neck in & closes his eyes tightly in preparation.

Gingerkittykat · 13/10/2019 16:56

Things they remember:

The sound of the toilet flushing means someone is about to come out so they run to the toilet door.

The sound of the microwave pinging means food will soon arrive so time to come and mooch.

To be terrified on the drive to the vet, but lie down and sleep on the way home.

That drawer A has tinfoil in it so if I open it to run away scared even though I only take the tinfoil out a small proportion of the time I open the drawer.

The sound of me stubbing a cigarette out at the back door means it must be time to meow for some food or attention (and they must have incredible hearing to notice that)

There was a toy stuck under the springs of the couch, the cat went crazy trying to get it for weeks, we moved the sofa and couldn't see anything on the floor but he eventually managed to dislodge it much to our surprise.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/10/2019 17:35

I've just dropped the girls at the cattery, the girl who works there put them in a pen with a different lay out, (so she can see them more!) Snorg was looking for the ramp up to the sleeping quarters, and looked very perplexed that it wasn't where she thought it was. She still hadn't found it by the time I left! She was given a chair to jump on instead.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 14/10/2019 20:21

I think mine knows routine more than anything, also the time when things happen.

She gets her dinner about 6.45, before we eat. I’m off work this week and tonight she was snoozing on the couch next to me, whereas usually it’s not long after we get in so we’re all more active - at 6.45 she sat bolt upright, jumped down and headed to the kitchen.

DP often makes sandwiches for work before we go to bed, and she knows he does this about 9.30 and she might get some ham. As soon as she hears or sees him go to the kitchen, she is through like a shot.

I usually get up at 6.40, and she gets breakfast - she was patting my face exactly then this morning. (NO.)

Weirdly she loves the cat box. We tend to bring it in to the living room and leave it open the night before any vet trip so it doesn’t seem strange. She goes and lies in it straight away. If the door on it is latched, she cries until it’s opened. (If she’s in the box and it’s moving, or actually in the vet, you would think she was being brutally tortured from the noise she makes.)

FlyingFlamingo · 14/10/2019 21:54

I often wonder if bigcat remembers her previous home, she was left at the rescue at 7 months old. She certainly shows no recognition of her original name, she very obviously knows the one we gave her and responds to it.

Lweji · 15/10/2019 07:39

Mine's memory is at least as good as mine.
Every time I leave the balcony door open he goes there, but quickly exits as soon as I approach the door again. He remembers when I last locked him out by mistake. I do too and don't lock it without checking first.
We seem to forget at the same time because when he stops getting in by himself is when I stop checking and he gets locked out there again. Blush
