Does your cat (or any cat) know words?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/10/2019 22:57

My DP says cats do not understand words, just tone of voice/voices they know. I think our cat definitely knows the following words, and he is wrong.

Her name
Dinner
Outside
Garden
Little num (what we call a treat)
No
In or out
Bye bye (if she has an inkling for staying in the garden at bedtime, bye bye is the final word that has her dashing in)
Sit (I have trained her to sit on command, using little nums. I grew up with dogs.)

Does your cat know words?

No words whatsoever between the two of them. Thick as mince, this pair.
My last cat knew her name, and "breakfast".

BarbaraStrozzi · 09/10/2019 12:35

There was actually a scientific paper a few months back (Science I think) the upshot of which was "Cats do recognise their names, they just don't care." Grin

Mine knows her name and "out", and even has a meow which sounds like "ow" to signal a desire to go out. She also has a meow which sounds hilariously like "no" directed at pretty much anything the small human does to her.

ClientListQueen · 09/10/2019 12:36

Here he is saying mama

Papergirl1968 · 09/10/2019 13:06

Ollie! Grin
ClientListQueen, are you YesQueen, with another name change?

CatCave · 09/10/2019 13:10

Mine is a rescue and we gave him a new name only a couple of months ago which he definitely responds to.

He also knows "hungry?" at dinner time.

His best trick is waiting at the bottom of the stairs on our shared landing meowing until I carry him inside.

ClientListQueen · 09/10/2019 13:19

@Papergirl1968 yes

Papergirl1968 · 09/10/2019 13:42

Queen, Ollie has blown your cover if you were trying to go incognito!

ClientListQueen · 09/10/2019 13:53

No, it's more just not to link posts Smile there's a method!

JorisBonson · 09/10/2019 19:43

Our old girl is thick as mince and knows nothing.

Our middle girl knows her name and comes when you whistle to her.

Little boy is a clever sausage. He knows his name (and the tone of it) dinner, but my favourite I've taught him is "shall we go to bed?" and he zooms upstairs to his cosy spot

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 09/10/2019 20:22

queen him saying “mama” is amazing!

Current cat seems to know "Where's your mouse?" and "fetch" but rarely responds to his name...

Bonbonchance · 09/10/2019 20:27

Mine definitely knows:

Her name
Dinner
Hungry
Bedtime
No!
Up
Outside

and I think
Treat
Vet

Probably more but doesn’t let on as she’s very smart!

Horses4 · 09/10/2019 20:28

Boycat knows ‘No’ and I get some amount of backchat for it.

AlexaAmbidextra · 09/10/2019 20:46

Brush.

She loves being brushed and if I say the word she zooms from wherever she is in the house to my bedside table where the brush is kept in a draw.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/10/2019 20:52

My cat knows his name and will come when called...unless he doesn’t want to.

MrsCatEThigh · 12/10/2019 05:17

I swear my cat understands every word MrCat says; he's very vocal with him and they have conversations. He's practically silent with me, doesn't even mew for food. However, he understands:

His name and nickname
Yum yums (food)
Birdies
Buzz Bzzz (flies, spiders etc.)
Bedtime
Walkie (yes, he goes for a walk)
Mummy and Daddy (Blush)
No
Down
Up
Brushie (Grooming time)
Mousie (playtime)

And as stated above, anything MrCat says!

Gumbo · 12/10/2019 05:41

Mine knows 'take it outside!' - which results in whatever random rodent/bird/snake/whatever that has just been brought in for me not necessarily dead get picked back up again and taken back out to the garden. However, this only works if I'm on the ball and spot it pretty sharpish, otherwise all knowledge of 'take it outside' vanishes and she gapes at me in bemusement while her prey scurries about the house

beatriceprior · 12/10/2019 06:10

My cat knows

Ham
Dinner
Get down
Out
Give me a kiss
His name
Tuna

fantasmasgoria1 · 12/10/2019 06:23

She is only 7 months but definitely knows her name, get down, no and treats. My old cat knew : milk, treats, dinner, come and have a love (cuddles), no and get down, his name, come here,my old cat had a very loving temperament and was usually well behaved. Cats know more than people think but sometimes choose to ignore.

FenellaVelour · 12/10/2019 14:56

One of ours knows her name, “food”, “up” and “Dreamies”.
The other is thick and doesn’t seem to know any. That or she entirely disdains responding to us.

TroysMammy · 12/10/2019 15:55

fantasmasgoria1 My kitten is 3 1/2 months old and he only knows come on quick. He is oblivious to no, down and off. I have a water spray on the table but he seems to enjoy being soaked and licks up the droplets off the placemats Confused. I'm hoping by the time he's 7 months old, or sooner, he has a command of the English language.

alphajuliet123 · 12/10/2019 16:10

His name and nickname
Down (as in lie down when brushing him or taking collar off)
Tuna! (rare treat)
No (various tones depending on crime!)
What's up? (gets me the biggest miaow)
Where's [husband/kids]? (sits at window waiting for them to appear)
Come on (will follow us)
Tummy (rolls onto back for a scritch)
Good boy (tail up, long blink)
I love you (purrs, but only when I say it)

I love my cat so much, he's not the most talkative but he's super chilled. Very good at hearing any of the above, opening one eye, and then ignoring me. Also excellent at the Mumsnet head tilt.

Mummybares · 12/10/2019 16:35

Yes he knows No
Off
His name
Hello
Food
Go outside?
Come in

Toddlerteaplease · 13/10/2019 10:35

Just remembered about the time that Cheddar didn't come in from the garden when she usually would. I was getting a bit twitched. So I said to Snorg. "Go and find Cheddar" less than five minutes later, cheddar comes hurtling into the house with Snorg in hot pursuit. My friend who was visiting was seriously impressed!! (As was I!)
