Weeping sore - emergency vet worthy?

My cat was attacked (we presume) a couple of weeks ago & acquired 4 deep puncture wounds to his leg & underside. We took him to the vet & he had antibiotics and we thought all now healed.

Poor mite has just got up off his favourite chair & there is quite a large pool of pale blood. He is moving ok and just eaten but even the few minutes it took him to eat his food another pool has collected from where he is standing so it's clearly actively dripping. He's licking the wound which has clearly reopened and he doesn't look distressed but The sheer volume of blood/liquid for a cat is quite worrying.
Our of hours is £195 before any treatment (plus taxi as dh & I are mid-way through a bottle of wine Blush) which is a LOT of money to us and something we'd have to borrow & if needs must we will suck it up BUT he seems fine in himself so not sure it's emergency worthy.....

Confused help what do I do??!!!! Can post photo of wound/stain if it helps!

Where are the wounds? If it's on his body could you fashion some sort of cat bodysuit to stop him licking it

MustardScreams · 05/10/2019 19:28

If he seems fine can you give it a good clean with boiled water with a teaspoon of salt dissolved in it, and fashion something to cover it. A baby vest is a good idea if you have one of those?

Keep on eye out for lethargy, not eating, urine output etc etc and if anything changes or worsens then yes it’s an emergency vet job.

Does the discharge smell foul? Does your cat go outside?
If it doesn't smell and your cat goes outdoor it's probably a new, more recent wound. If the flow doesn't stop it's probably best to get it seen sooner.
Is your vet clinic open tomorrow at all?

HappyHammy · 05/10/2019 19:55

I would go. He might be in pain and it could be a new wound or the old one has opened up.

Echo the comment about creating a saltwater wash. Cats are also absolute buggers for nibbling off their scabs, so it may be a few rounds of healing up.

YeOldeTrout · 05/10/2019 20:04

Tough call. :(

mineofuselessinformation · 05/10/2019 20:19

By pale do you mean sort of creamy looking?
If so, it sounds like a burst abscess to me.
If you think it's pure blood he needs a vet sooner rather than later, but if it's an abscess he may well need more antibiotics anyway.

picklemepopcorn · 05/10/2019 20:42

Draining is usually a good thing. By pale, do you mean watery?

I'd second the salt water wash, and keeping an eye on it. See what tomorrow brings. If she's eating and weeing normally, then that's a good sign.

thetardis · 05/10/2019 20:46

tomorrow will still be ooh. i'd go send dp and cat in a taxi. presuming from q you don't have insurance? ooh is the price you pay and you have to suck it up (the cost, not the... yunno... )

thetardis · 05/10/2019 20:49

to add: the last time we had an emergency visit it was grass ffs. the fuss he made when we put him in the carrier dislodged it [facepalm]. still did the right thing taking him.

Houseyhousey · 06/10/2019 10:08

Thanks for all the advice sorry I forgot to update last night. We ended up bathing the wound with saltwater and fashioning a bandage to keep it covered and just let him sleep. He seems fine this morning and the oozing has stopped so no immediate emergency but will be taking him to our usual vet first thing Monday.
