Best cat food?

I'm wondering about cat food. Various friends have had pets that have died early having been diagnosed with diabetes, high sugar levels and kidney failure. Is there a cat food that could help to keep cats healthy?

Currently feeding our cat Felix but would be interested to know what is the best food, health-wise.

Grain free, high meat content
Wet food generally especially for male cats
Zooplus has a lot of good stuff. Look at the ingredients

I'm not sure what I should actually look for. I don't know what makes something better health-wise.

Off the top of my head
Blink, Lily's kitchen, applaws, encore, almo nature, wild freedom (the dry is like crack for cats, crave (my cat loves this), meowing heads, natures menu (v popular)
Most of them will say high meat content/grain free/ or something similar

Ok, great. My class-less cat hates Lily's Kitchen. She will eat it eventually but she prefers the cheap stuff- I suppose the cheaper stuff is full of chemicals.

It's worth maybe going to say pets at home where you can get individual pouches to try
Mine won't touch some brands. Others he loves. I've found he adores salmon oil so I use a drop of that on most of his food!
Weirdly he likes Lily's kitchen dry but isn't fussed on the wet... cats GrinHmm

Our cat came to us eating Felix, but had such dry skin and so much moulting that the vet suspected a chronic skin condition! However, after much trial and error (and pricey cat food being binned untouched!) we have found what works. She really loves the Applaws wet food, and James Wellbeloved grain-free dry. The Applaws wet is expensive and not a complete food so we feed 1 tin in the evening (that she goes crazy for!) and have the dry food out the rest of the time. Her coat is now super-soft and silky, no dry skin at all and very little hair loss. The vet was amazed at the change in her!

She also hated Lily's kitchen (and Encore, Crave, Meowing heads etc.!)

@YesQueen where do you get salmon oil from?

Cats are obligated carnivores. They don't have a system designed to eat much of anything else. A high % meat good with organs and no grain or cereal and little vegetables. They don't need it. They need raw meat ideally.

Once a week we make a batch of food for our 2. Rabbit, chicken hearts and livers and a high % fat beef mince. When serving we add a spoonful of fish in water not oil or brine. We top this up with a dried food caller Orijen. Superb product!

There are some decent quality foods out there. Some supermarkets are starting to stock some of the better brands. Make sure the food is a complete food rather than a complementary one to ensure they get all the nutrients they need.Vets often sell individual tins/pouches/small packs of food you can try before bulk ordering.
