A bottom question (it's gross, sorry)

My ginger boy is almost 1 year old (his birthday in 3 weeks!). We've had him since he was 9 weeks old.

His poo has always been horrific and he's always had a bit of a sensitive belly (Dreamies being the main culprit). We worm him regularly and keep an eye on what he eats as much as we can (he's very much an outdoor boy and also steals food when our backs are turned - the latest being a Portuguese custard tart).

As long as we've had him he's gone through phases of having slightly bloody poo and a slightly bloody bottom. We've taken him to the vet so many times - each time we're told to keep an eye on it and that's it, each time it goes away.

He's a happy little chap, only ever off his food once when he had a high temperature after a paw injury. It hardly ever seems to bother him (except the time I caught him dragging his bum on my new carpet 🙄).

I don't know if I'm being fobbed off by my vet, if I need to be restricting him more, if I need to keep taking him to the vet (which stresses him out, he's been a lot for his young age).

Sorry for the slight ramble, hope I made a little bit of sense!

When I say horrific, I mean just stinky stinky boy poo!

I feel your pain. Cheddar's is horrific and she doesn't bury it either. The lady who owned the rescue I got her from gave me some psyillium powder to try. Apparently it's great for cats with diarrhoea. I also tried ground arrow rot and had two non smelly poos. But stopped that as my long haired girl got the squits. (Probably unrelated to the arrowroot) and that is something you really don't want to have to deal with!!

Our cat’s is horrific and bloody on anything but royal canin dried food. I have tried grain free, high meat and all of the expensive ones but they have all been the same.
It’s annoyingly as RC is quite expensive and not the best quality but it works for her.
Maybe his food doesn’t suit him.

It could be worth experimenting with others.

It sounds like his analysis glands are blocked and need to be expressed. The stink dragging bum bloody poo are all symptoms and I think if there is blood he may need antibiotics too. I think your vet is being very remiss missing this. One of my old boys suffered from this.

madcatladyforever · 25/09/2019 22:53

Analysis??? Anal

theoriginalmadambee · 25/09/2019 23:23

Oh your poor cat.

Vet as soon as possible. If it's not anal glands ask the vet for antibiotics for his stomach. Worked for us when ours was a kitten, after trying de-worming, probiotics etc. Antibiotics was the solution.

JorisBonson · 26/09/2019 07:36

Thanks all. Another trip to the vet and food experimenting time.

The annoying thing is we've just got to a happy medium with a wet / dry combo that all 3 of ours will eat. There's always one!

Has anyone any experience of using probiotic powders? Thinking it would be a good longer term solution

I wanted to try them with Cheddar but couldn't actually find any. Scrumbles food has them added. I found Cheddar Is better on wheat free food. She was vomiting huge amounts every day till we swapped to Iams

Mia184 · 26/09/2019 10:16

@Toddlerteaplease FortiFlora is a probiotic for cats. It is a bit difficult to get (I am in Germany) and quite expensive though.

JorisBonson · 26/09/2019 11:09

@Mia184 I was actually looking at FortiFlora this morning. I'll give it a go.

He absolutely loves his food but will turn his nose up if he smells anything but cat food goodness so will have to see how this goes!

All 3 eat from each others bowls and our vet is a bit worried about oldest girls kidneys so I'll give them a call before I buy anything.

Please go to the vet and try to get antibiotics Smile.

But if your cats have varying needs, i can recommend sure feed (we have one)
They cost the tip of a jet, but works well.

I'm away this weekend but DP is going to get him in for a check up 👍

Oh I just continue Grin. Vets don't normally administer antib. For this but it was like a magic wand for us.
Will stop now Blush.

MitziK · 26/09/2019 17:39

I switched to grain free. Butcher's wet food, whatever is grain free and high meat content in the supermarket (Lily's Kitchen en was her royal fluffyknickers' preferred choice for a while, but recently it's been harder to get hold of and she has decided she doesn't really care as long as she gets fed).

Took a couple of weeks, but she's been fine ever since - except when DP assumed that normal cat food would do - I made him clean the results up and he's not about to make that mistake ever again.
