Best OTC flea treatment?

Please can anyone advise what the most effective OTC spot-on flea treatment is? I did do a search but the answers seemed a bit various ...

My two cats have always had Prinovox, but the vet wants £39 for a pack of 4 now and even buying it online's getting crazy as they've started asking £40 for a prescription (each)

Obviously it has to work, but I'd really prefer to avoid spending this kind of crazy money if I can so any tips would be really appreciated

Prinovox doesn't just treat fleas. It also treats mites and various worms. If you buy just a flea treatment then you'd need another for worms. Advantage is an OTC treatment that just treats fleas

Ah - thanks, pixie, I didn't know that about the ticks and worms as well

So is there an equivalent OTC drug which would do the same job and avoid all this prescription-buying, do you know?

I use advantage for fleas and a drontal pill for worming the cats

I think all the combined ones are prescription only. Advantage is supposed to be ok for fleas but don't know what would treat worms. I use Stronghold Plus monthly for fleas/ some worms and Profender every 6 months for other worms including tapeworm

Thanks very much, PristineCondition

I see Vet Drugs Online are offering a whole year's supply of Advantage and Drontal for £33, which is a fraction of what just the prescriptions were costing me - needless to say I've ordered it, though I will of course keep an eye on the cats to make sure it's all working as it should

Ah - cross posted with you, pixie Smile

At least I've now got something sorted and won't have to revisit it for another year (as long as it works okay of course). Granted it means giving them a pill each, but luckily they're both very gentle cats so I'll hopefully get away with my fingers intact!!

Advantage + broad spectrum worming tablets is the closest you'll get OTC, just be mindful they won't cover ear mites, ticks etc.

I use mainly Advantage with Advocate from the vet's every few months, this seems to work well here but our garden is catproofed so my four don't come into contact with other cats, and never go to stay in a cattery, and therefore have less chance of catching anything.

I agree with Advantage and Drontal.
