Buying bulk cat food

We've just adopted a 3 month old kitten. I've never had a cat in the UK before. I've had nine cats back in the country where I grew up though. So I'm pretty clueless about having a cat here.

About food - there are some good offers on Amazon, by far the cheapest I've found. Like, 120 pouches of wet food for £27. Should I buy this? But what if he doesn't like the taste of those? Wouldn't it go to waste? What do you give your kitten?
How about Aldi's wet cat food?

Litter - clumping or non clumping? I find clumping easier to clean. But what are the advantages of non clumping litter then?

Sorry about all that questions. Thanks for reading.

Hope you don't mind me placemarking on your thread, I've just got a cat and bulk buying sounds like a good idea so watching with interest.

I have clumping cat litter, I actually bought some cheap corn litter by accident in B&M and have found it really good. It clumps so you can use a scoop to sift it when cat has done its business then top up every couple of days instead of having to change the whole tray constantly. It doesn't smell at all and is flushable so easy to dispose of the scooped bits down the loo.

My cat is large and quite messy when he digs in his tray and I also find the corn litter easy to sweep up and it doesn't get stuck in his paws and trailed through the house.

Congrats on your new kitty... you know we need a picture, right? Smile

I buy my girls food in 10kg bags. They aren't fussy and won't go off it.

TheQueef · 22/09/2019 08:29

I buy in bulk from Amazon.
If it's something they haven't tried I buy small packs first.
The tinned shiny cat tuna was a miss but my friends cat adored it. So swaps are possible.
Wood litter is £10~ delivered for 30l. The cats all prefer this.

Try and buy food that is grain-free. Cats are carnivores and cheap fillers are not good for them.

Zooplus is a good place to look. Yes it is more expensive, but you have healthier happier cats in the long run, so it’s more than worth it.

All my cats have loved one food and then as soon as I bulk buy decide it must be poisonous Hmm But you might be lucky!

Thanks, @pizzacrunch and @toddlerteaplease. Placemark away. 😊

I'll have a look in B&M for the corn litter. So I'll buy the bulk offer on Amazon.

Here's the kitty.

Bulk buying is great if they like the food. The pouches you quoted are 22.5p each - comparable to four Felix pouches from Poundland (for, well, £1) and Sainsbury's do 12 pouches for £2.35 I think (my girl isn't as keen on some of these so per a PP I swap with a neighbour). I use Sainsbury's Basics litter - £1.80 for a huge bag - but she is outside a lot of the time so less relevant.

MonaChopsis · 22/09/2019 08:42

Just a note that most of the pouches can't be recycled, so maybe consider buying cat food in tins or boxed kibble?

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/09/2019 08:54

If they like corn litter you can try chick crumb from farm feed outlets. Very similar.

Plump82 · 22/09/2019 08:55

I've been advised to steer clear of clumping litter as kittens often have a wee nibble of it which can then clump in their tummies. I've got catsan non clumping for them arriving as that's what they're currently using but I'll make a transition to wood pellets.

Ironfloor269 · 22/09/2019 09:10

@plump82 - thanks for the tip about clumping litter. I'll steer clear of that then. Luckily, I've just bought a massive bag of non clumping. From here on out, I'll buy corn or wood chip litter. Flushability is huge benefit.

@MonaChopsis - good point about the pouches. I'll let out for the cans.

Yup, picture required as payment for advice!!

We buy in both food and litter in bulk from zooplus. It might be worth trying your cat out on food brands first to make sure they like it though!

PizzaCrunch · 22/09/2019 09:54

Oh my cat is older so I didn't even think about a kitten trying to eat it!

My corn litter does clump but is completely natural with no chemicals or nasty things added, I would look into it properly before you go down that route incase it does give her a sore tummy. I would definitely reccommend it when she's past the stage of trying to eat it though!

She is beautiful btw Smile

Dollymixture22 · 22/09/2019 20:49

I buy in bulk on amazon subscribe. The only problem is my little angel goes off food after a while, usually just when I have bought a months worth😻

JorisBonson · 23/09/2019 09:01

Our 3 are ridiculous and won't eat anything but Gourmet Perle pouches Hmm

Every other week we buy 2 x boxes of 60 from Sainsburys, costing £36. That definitely keeps us going.

Luckily they are less fussy with dry food and eat Lidl's own. We get a bag of that a week.

We use Catsan (luckily ours go outside most of the time) - the best litter I’ve ever found is a crystal one from Wilko but only comes in small bags Sad

carsleyladiessociety · 23/09/2019 13:38

Woodchip litter is cheapest from pets at home at the moment- £5.99 a sack (agriselect). They deliver free over £39 so I tend to stock up on cat litter.

If you've got the room to store it and the cash to buy it in the first place, buying woodchip horse bedding by the pallet works out around £4 a 15kg/30l sack. However you get between 60-65 sacks on a pallet.

AnnaMariaDreams · 23/09/2019 18:11

I buy dry food and Cat’s best okoplus litter in bulk from zooplus. Ours aren’t fussy.
At the moment due to Brexit I have a big stockpile Grin
