Pretty sure my cat has ear mites, I have an appt at the vet tomorrow but does anyone with experience of this know if there's anything I can do to keep them away in the future?

Tia 😊

In future use Stronghold as your flea treatment. That also kills mites. (I think I'm right - but I might be confusing it with Advocate - anyway it's one of them - your vet will know).

The stuff I was given to treat Snorgs ear mites was £37 a bottle. I almost had heart failure!

Oh God,I'm expecting a big vets bill tbh- aren't they always?

He has Advocate on a monthly plan with the vet.

It's probably Stronghold then. You will just need an ear cleaner fluid and drops. It shouldn't cost too much.

Advocate says on the box it kills ear mites.

viccat · 20/09/2019 19:05

Advocate kills ear mites, I specifically had a chat about this with my vet as I was using Advantage which is the same active ingredient but for fleas only whereas Advocate is for worms and ear mites as well.

thecatneuterer · 20/09/2019 20:15

I've just done a quick Google and both Stronghold and Advocate kill ear mites. It's strange that your cat got them then OP, considering you use Advocate. What did the vet say?

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 20/09/2019 23:15

Oh interesting. Vet tomorrow at 10.

Not 100% sure on advocate:s effectiveness for fleas tbh ,I never have been.

I've used Frontline spray on mine when I've suspected ear mites, a quick skoosh in the ear and it seems to work fairly quickly. A vet told me this off the record when I was skint and couldn't afford expensive treatment.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 21/09/2019 14:07

The vet cleaned his ears with a cotton bud, which he loved 🙄😂 and said she would treat as inflammation and possibly ear mites but wasn't convinced. We have some steroid drops and the visit including meds was only £28 which I was greatly relieved at. I have to take him back in a week.

I used Otodex for suspected ear mites as I thought it worth trying before an expensive vet trip. I did it for about a week and repeated it after 2 weeks, and then another 2 weeks, following some random info online. It worked though! No more black flecks. It only cost £4 for one bottle and this treated all 3 cats as a precaution.
