Doing the toilet in the bath!!

We adopted two 4 month old females 2 weeks ago. One of them (I think it’s always the same one) pees in the bidet or bath if we leave the door open. The other day she peed in the kitchen sink (gross!) She has also pooped in the bath a few times, mainly when we first got them but she did it again today! I have never had a cat act like this. What can I do? Will it change once they’re spayed? Is she marking territory? They have a litter tray which they use.

My cat did this when she had cystitis.

Smotheroffive · 07/09/2019 11:59

I would wonder whether she was happy with her litter tray (position, or cleaned sufficiently frequently)

I might also try putting the litter tray in the bath. Where is it, animals normally want to dump their rubbish as far away from their sleeping and eating quarters as possible.

I clean the litter tray a couple of times a day. I have tried two different litters and they seem ok with both. Litter tray in garage, not near food

Mentioned it to vet when I took them to get dewormed. She didn’t test for anything

I would get another litter tray and put it in an alternative position. Where is the bathroom in relation to the garage?

Thehagonthehill · 07/09/2019 12:09

They need a litter tray each in different places. My cats won't share.

Hugosclock · 07/09/2019 12:21

Ok, I’ll try a second tray. Though they do both use the same tray (at times!)
Bathroom is upstairs

You maybe cleaning the litter tray to often as they need to have their own smell to feel comfortable.

Good litter rules are for two cats you need three trays, remove solid matter at least once daily, empty out litter as required for your type of litter (wood tends to be 4 days, Clay -1week, silica -1 month). Only wash and disinfected once monthly unless diarrhoea present then do more regularly.

dementedpixie · 07/09/2019 12:30

I would put a tray upstairs then.

Hugosclock · 07/09/2019 13:31

I tried having a tray in the house when we got them but I couldn’t stand it. There was a horrible smell even though I would clean it out. It honestly made me wonder how people do it.
Our house is very small and the rooms are tiny. Like, there is literally no space in the upstairs bathroom to put a tray. Or on the landing. I initially put it in the downstairs loo, but see above!
My parents cats always did the toilet outside, we never had litter trays in the house and this is what I am hoping for too once they’re fully vaccinated.

Our female also used to use the bath as a kitten. They had 3 clean litter trays between them, tried tray in the bath and she just went the other end!
Anyway, she basically used the bath annoying frequently from around 4 months-6/7 months (maybe 4 times per week!), used the litter trays otherwise.
After 7 months she started being allowed outside (spayed at 6 months), and never used the bath since.

They now have just one little tray in the house between them instead of 3, but it only gets used in emergencies if they need to go overnight when we keep them in (maybe once every 2-3 weeks).

mamansnet · 07/09/2019 14:40

Mine did it to tell me that she wasn't happy being indoors and wanted to be outside. She'd been rescued from a shelter, pretty sure she'd been feral before then so being stuck in a small flat was NOT what she wanted (better than a cage though, the ungrateful moggy!)

Hugosclock · 08/09/2019 11:05

She has done it again, this time in the downstairs shower. (I’ve been keeping the door shut as this is where she pees in the bidet, but DH left it open). I have put out a second litter tray yesterday, which she has used.
I found this chart online and the poop is like the second diarrhoea description, so I’m wondering if her food is bothering her and linked to the problem. Though she could still go to the litter tray of course! I’m in the process of deworming and thought the soft poop was that, but maybe not.
I appreciate all your ideas.

What food are you giving? Ideally it should be high meat with no cereals. Poo should be formed and not sloppy

Hugosclock · 08/09/2019 11:21

Good idea on the water. I thought closing the doors would work but obviously they have to stay closed!
I’ve been feeding them a dry kitten food bought from a pet supply shop, I think it’s a good make. It has probiotics in it. Also a variety of different wet foods. I’ve been mixing it up to give them variety and see what they like but maybe that’s too much change.

dementedpixie · 08/09/2019 11:23

Check the ingredients on the dry food. There are some expensive brands (like royal canin) that are full of cereals and not a lot of meat

PineappleTart · 08/09/2019 11:23

Try not to mix food around too much, let them get used to one brand.

User7777 · 08/09/2019 11:25

Another one for cystitis here. Was the main symptom for my boy.

Hugosclock · 08/09/2019 11:28

First 37% of ingredients is chicken, then 31% dried chicken.
Will simplify diet.

Well you maybe have a choice to make if you rule everything medical out then....

Give one type of food for now until they settle and maybe a visit to the vets for a health check.

Plump82 · 08/09/2019 11:44

Please go back to the vets and get them to check for cystitis. Especially if she's eating dried food. Shes maybe associating her box with pain and that's why shes pooping in the bath as well.

Hugosclock · 08/09/2019 12:42

@gamerchick she was doing this when the litter tray was in the house, and she has unlimited access to the trays now
