My cats have become fussy eaters

My cats - fine from November to end August have become fussy eaters. (They turned one in May)

They used to enjoy a mix of dry and wet food.

Now they turn their noses up at both dry and wet food.

We've tried swapping brands of both. No result.

They wear quick release collars (our neighbours return the collars when they come off) so people know they belong to someone. We're a friendly area and all neighbours know they are ours. So I don't think anyone else is feeding them.

I'm getting a bit worried. One is tiny and couldn't really afford to lose weight.

They both hunt. Are they self feeding? When should I worry?

Nothing has changed that should be upsetting them

Any ideas?

What food are they on just now? Have you had them checked by a vet just in case?

HuggedTheRedwoods · 04/09/2019 20:33

Are they up to date with being wormed and flea'd?

SciFiScream · 04/09/2019 20:57

Yes very recently had a full check up at the vets. With flea and worming treatment (14 Aug)

Vet very happy with them.

They are having purina dried food (chicken and duck) and at the moment Tesco tray food with purina gourmet stuff when they haven't eaten for a while!

Could you try heating the food up a little. It makes it extra stinky and appetising

SciFiScream · 04/09/2019 21:50

I've tried heating the food up but have maybe been a bit too cautious. How long for? What heat (using a microwave).

I always used a microwave. Not hot that it's going to burn them but warm enough to touch.

They've both eaten a lot more over the last 24 hours than before. I bought those cat yoghurt hand feeding things and squeezed into their food which seemed to help. They've also both had some dry food. I caved and bought cat milk too just to ensure they were getting enough calories.

They cuddle and play and go outside and sleep and seem well enough...I'm just worried about their eating. Argh. BlushBlushBlushBlush

It's almost like worrying about the kids! Blush

It's in the Cat Manual to switch it up every now and again just to keep their humans on their toes. Usually it's prompted by you buying a 10kg sack of their favourite dried food, the only one they've ever liked - the minute that sack comes in the door they start to detest the food just to spite you.

Welcome to my life. I have a dry food he will have ( Lily’s kitchen ). But wet food. Ugh. I have tried everything. And I mean everything. And nothing. Yet he sits in front of the fridge and waits for food.
I know just ignore it. I even tried chicken , fish , ham. U name it. Nothing. The cats mad Confused

catismychild · 05/09/2019 14:49

Could they have picked up an illness? Last month one of my boys went from a ravenous pig to barely eating. The vet said he probably caught a bug, one antibiotic shot and a couple of days of medication later he was back to being a little pig.

It's really funny. I had a break of 16 years with no cat companionship and it's changed so much in that time. My old darling cats never were fussy. These two are going that way. Honestly they live a life of luxury and cuddles.

Food disappearing quite well today. I will be watching them intently...

Could it just be because they are slowing down the rate they are growing at, so need less food than they did as little kittens?

SciFiScream · 05/09/2019 21:45

Ooo @Allergictoironing maybe? That's something I hadn't thought of. They are now 17-months old so perhaps that's it!
