Early morning cat

Please help I am so tired and not sure what else to do. I have an 18 month on female neutered Maine coon, for months she has been waking us at 4:30-5 am. I feed her now at anywhere between this time, usually with an automatic feeder if I remember to set it. After she has eaten she sometimes comes onto the bed for a while otherwise she makes as much noise as she can. She scratches the bed the carpet the children's doors, she meows and she is so loud. I usually get up so often that is the end of it.

I'm tired but feel I need to get up to stop her waking the whole house and as I wanted her so feel it's my responsibility. For info she is an indoor cat, she has cat trees and toys, I do take her outside in the day if I am not working.i don't know what to do.

Any ideas gladly received.

Will she climb on the bed for a snuggle and settle down? I have a cat that wakes me as she just wants fuss. She makes biscuits but will stop it If I stroke her. She sleeps on the pillow next to me.

Our cats were locked in the kitchen overnight. I’d sometimes hear them playing with toys. They aren’t locked in Now, they are used to staying downstairs overnight now.

I used to have a free ranging cat who was an early riser, I get much more sleep now.

Egg · 04/09/2019 06:33

Yes we have to lock our cat downstairs overnight otherwise she shouts at 3am!

fantasmasgoria1 · 04/09/2019 06:39

Our 6 month old kitten kept waking us so we shut our bedroom door. She has the small bedroom all to herself and spends a lot of the night in there. I am struggling to sleep at the moment and often get up between 2am and 4 am and she comes out of her room when she hears me. She often just wants a cuddle and fuss. I only give her cat meat after 5am as she has biscuits for during the night.

LongtimeLurker29 · 04/09/2019 06:46

We put our cat in the kitchen overnight. It's the furthest room from the bedrooms as he would wake us up at around 3am if we didn't.

I've resorted to filling his biscuit bowl before bed so if he's hungry he can have a snack on those before we get up x

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/09/2019 07:23

Mines locked in the kitchen overnight, and I mean locked because he’s a Bengal and closed doors are no barrier.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/09/2019 07:52

My parents put their boy in the conservatory overnight.

BayandBlonde · 04/09/2019 08:00

Both my indoor cats are on my bed from 4.30am, at about 5am they will start very gently, breathing in my ears is their favourite Confused trying to wake me up

Even though I am now awake I won't open my eyes until about 5.30am. Once my eyes are open, if I continue to ignore them, that's when they start shouting

Grambler · 04/09/2019 08:43

We shut ours in the kitchen because of this. However this summer they have worked out that they can go out of the cat flap and wander around outside yowling at windows from the ground, even climbing up and walking around trying to get in through upstairs windows Grin And then I'll go downstairs and there's two full bowls of food. They just want company. Wankers Hmm

Dollymixture22 · 04/09/2019 19:00

Mine does this too. She’s not hungry, she has a cat flap so doesn’t need let out, she just wants attention.

I pick her up, carry her back to bed and she falls asleep.

Asshole.

moonpiggle · 04/09/2019 19:19

Mine is kept in kitchen overnight too with access to garage and living room because she will cry if she is just in the kitchen as she has a few sleeping areas. Id have her in my bed but my partner wont have it!

RandomMess · 04/09/2019 19:24

Yep shut them far far away and ignore. They adapt to the new routine soon enough!

MojitoMojitoo · 05/09/2019 09:37

Mine wakes me between 4-4:30 every morning, I've just accepted this is my life now hahaha

RocketRacoonsFurryBalls · 05/09/2019 09:42

MojitoMojitoo · 05/09/2019 10:04

Sorry, Op. Are you saying you've tried locking her in somewhere downstairs overnight and it didn't work? How come?

MojitoMojitoo · 05/09/2019 12:23

Ahh thank you Smile

My little one Bella is who wakes me as she sleeps on my pillow and it makes me feel how you do but I just cant bring myself to evict her at bedtime even though it means she wakes me just 20 minutes before my alarm every working day!

Are you using the app? I deleted it and reinstalled it and then it worked for me Smile

Oldraver · 05/09/2019 12:53

My alarm call was 3.30am this morning which is not on as he only has to wait till 4am for DadDad to get up

I dont know what the answer is as Ern meows loudly and you can hear him all over the house

RocketRacoonsFurryBalls · 05/09/2019 13:02

MojitoMojitoo OMG so pretty! 😻

RandomMess · 05/09/2019 16:23

Can you not see it's ridiculous to not just shut them elsewhere? Ours quickly adjusted and ask to go bed if it gets too late 😂

rupertpenryswife · 05/09/2019 16:56

Yes we have locked her In many locations she is so loud you can hear her around the whole house including outside!! She scratches doors and eats cables if she can get to them. We have hidden/covered our cables.

She is unbelievably loud not sure if anyone has heard a Maine coon meow!!! She has quite a range of meows for different occasions.

Can't post a photo it won't allow me.

Yep family breed them, I have very vocal large cats too.

I am just more stubborn...

KatherineJaneway · 05/09/2019 17:26

If you find a solution please tell me! I have a two year old Maine Coon and he gets up early quite a lot. It helps if I tire him out before bed. I can't lock him in, he scratches and cries like mad.

He gets most indignant if I wake him up though Grin

MrsBrill · 05/09/2019 17:37

OP what time does your cat eat her evening meal? Could you try feeding her later? We had this issue (our cat also scratches and makes a racket if shut downstairs) and I found some advice online which basically said:

  • play with them at night for at least 10 mins, before bed
  • feed last thing before you go up
  • don't give them breakfast until you are up and dressed (so they stop associating waking you up with being given breakfast)

This has (mainly) worked with our cat.
