Ive just pulled string out of my cats bum

So my Siamese was chasing a piece of string which was stuck to the back of my long haired cat, I then notice poo all over his bum stuck in his long fur and pieces dropping off over the carpet and he kept scooting and leaving skid marks all over the carpet 😫. So I run after them, the cats are now under the bed so I have to take all the storage boxes out and crawl under and pull him out.
I took him to the bath to get the poo off and wash his bum when I see that the piece of string is actually coming out of his bum, about 20cm. I gently pulled it out, it slid out easily, about another 10cm or so and there was no blood.

Do you think I should take him to the vets tomorrow or just keep an eye on him? Has anyone else ever pulled string out their cats bum?
I'm scared it could have caused an injury inside him, but I didn't know what to do and panicked as he was already going crazy trying to climb back out of the bath and clawing at me, with my toddler trying to 'help' wash him too.

Not string but I clearly remember our 1970s xmas tree losing lametta off it's lower branches and the family cat running around with sparkling threads hanging out of his bum! He was fine so hope yours is too.

Nonstopbuttmachine · 28/08/2019 14:24

Oh I remember my mum pulling sparkly strands out of our cat's bum at Christmas! Grin Hope he's ok OP

somewheresorted · 28/08/2019 15:10

🤣 this has made me laugh!

I hope he’s ok now OP?

beingchampion · 28/08/2019 15:12

Are you certain it's string and not a worm? Envy not envy

showgirl63 · 28/08/2019 16:26

Nonstop - ''twas a traditional part of a 70's xmas - not sure it's been highlighted properly on the 70s xmas ideas thread running at the moment Confused

I’d call the vet for advice. We had this when the cat ate an elastic band. There was concern about a blockage internally. Luckily she was ok but worth calling to check

I have rather long hair that sheds around the house. When cleaning the litter tray I frequently come across poo that looks similar to a string of sausages, little lumps held together by a long hair.

Magpiefeather · 28/08/2019 19:15

Too late now, but just for others reading, its not advised to pull string or similar out of cats bums for the very reason you say - in case it’s tightly wound round their intestine or something and causes an internal injury. Sounds like yours was ok but if it were me I think I’d go to vet just for reassurance . Hope all is ok

with my toddler trying to 'help' wash him too.

There's nothing like a toddlers help in theses situations to really put the cherry on the cake!!

I wouldn't worry too much about it, it's certainly a 'thing' with cats. Just keep a close eye and make sure kitty is eating and pooing normally and is active and sociable as usual.

Purpleartichoke · 28/08/2019 19:19

More than once. We have a cat who is part goat.
It’s not ideal because if it is tangled in the intestine you can cause damage. I am just sure to pull very gently. I’ve never encountered any resistance. If I did, I would stop and head to the vet.

Plump82 · 28/08/2019 19:22

Yes I've had to and she ended up seriously ill as the Christmas ribbon wrapped itself round her intestines. Her organs ended up failing and it was touch and go with her until she made a miraculous recovery the following day. Please be super careful.

My childhood rottweiler once ate a pair of shoes complete with laces.
Was happy to remind dm it was her ddog!!
Whole laces came out!
Yuck!!

fortifiedwithtea · 28/08/2019 19:27

My mum tells me the cat she had as a child ate the string that held the sunday roast together. He was fine.

InsertFunnyUsername · 28/08/2019 19:44

Better than the sock that came out of my rotties arse.

We did take him vets to be sure, a million pound later to be told hes fine but he would prefer %100 cotton Smile

Also toddlers are absolutely no help in these scenarios but they try bless em.

killerkoala · 28/08/2019 20:35

At least others have been through similar and I'm glad all the kitties were okay.
With 3 cats and a toddler I don't even bother with an Xmas tree anymore, it's like having 4 kids sometimes.
He seems totally fine in himself today anyway, and it was definitely string, well it was like cotton thread.
These cats are buggers for eating things they shouldn't, mine love chewing plastic for some reason too.

2 summers ago my husky ate a flip flip..
Wouldn't care but she hates the beach!!

Oldraver · 28/08/2019 21:33

Yes another one that had had to pull tinsel out the cats bum

Current cat frequently pops nuggets joined with grass or quite often my hair
