Flea treatments

We have used frontline on our girls for years and years and have never had a whiff of a flea. Our vet pitched a fabulous sell for provinox a few months ago and we skipped out of the practice with a bag full!

Anyway, since we've been using it I keep finding the odd flea here and there on them. I know fleas will jump on and then die but I never saw a single flea pre-provinox.

Do people still use frontline or is it truly as useless as the vet said?

Any other recommendations?

Advocate or stronghold plus is what we've used

jollyhollyhocks · 27/08/2019 22:25

I have found Frontline useless. Also Frontline plus - doesn't work either. I use advantage, but it is a constant battle, have to spray the house regularly as well. I haven't found a "brilliant" option yet...

Girliefriendlikescake · 28/08/2019 17:34

Used advocate here for years and have never seen a flea, I can go quite a few months between treatments as well.

NannaNoodleman · 28/08/2019 23:35

I've heard talk of advocate - I might give it a try.

You need to get it from a vet

Twooter · 29/08/2019 07:35

I would mention to your vets about the fleas. If it’s not working as well as they’ve been led to believe then it would be good for them to know.

dementedpixie · 29/08/2019 07:39

From googling, Provinox has the same active ingredients as Advocate

WarmthAndDepth · 29/08/2019 07:49

pixie, she did get it from a vet.
OP, it is high flea season, so likely your cats are picking up fleas which may not 'stay' as they're treated, but I would second Stronghold.
If you become infested, which I did last summer, Indorex killed absolutely every insect life form in our house for months and months, which I found quite distressing and worrying; our windowsills were littered with insects who, I imagine, would just have made their way out again eventually in normal circumstances (night moths, little butterflies, house flies) but who found the presence of Indorex absolute Kryptonite. Made me wonder about the impact on other life forms. But not a flea since.

dementedpixie · 29/08/2019 08:05

I didnt say she didnt. I'm saying if she wanted to try advocate then she'd need to get that from a vet too

WarmthAndDepth · 29/08/2019 08:09

pixie, massive apologies, I didn't spot that you were referring to a previous post! Sorry.

cosycableknit · 29/08/2019 08:15

Stronghold works really well. Since having this our cat has never had fleas again.

Lemoneeza · 29/08/2019 08:18

I've been using advantage for years which is the same chemical as the one from the vets. this year have been seeing a few fleas on cat and have had to spray whole house with indoorex. sprayed cat with some bob Martin spray I found in the cupboard and she is completely free of fleas and flea dirt.

Lonecatwithkitten · 29/08/2019 08:32

@dementedpixie is absolutely right advocate has lost it's patent so there are several generic versions out there Prinovox being one. The genetics are just as effective, but are usually better priced. For example 4pips of prinovox is a similar price to 3 of advocate.

ToftheB · 29/08/2019 09:32

I've always used Advantage, but I've found it less effective this summer...
Has anyone tried the oral treatments? Capstar and Program. They seem to use a different compound to Advantage (and to Frontline, which doesn't work for us either)

Lonecatwithkitten · 29/08/2019 18:37

Capstar is a knock down product - kills love fleas fast, but no residual effect. Really good for heavy infestation combined with other treatments.
Program is a larvicide does not kill live fleas, but prevents fleas breeding. Really good for indoor cats or combined with other treatments in heavy infestation.
If advantage has stopped working for you I would consider Bravecto spot on (prescription only) or Seresto collar ( over the counter).

dementedpixie · 29/08/2019 18:47

Stronghold plus has different active ingredients too

NannaNoodleman · 30/08/2019 10:02

Maybe it is just because it's peak flea season. I'll give it a couple more months and change to stronghold if there's still signs of fleas in autumn/winter.

Advocate is exactly the same as prinovox
