How do I tell the difference between cat wee or spray?

Male neutered cat, aged 4, extremely anxious and jumpy. Recently we’ve noticed small patches of cat wee in the house. He has always weed outside but has recently stopped doing so and starting using the litter tray.

I’ve been reading up on the problem and have established that it may be a sign of a UTI. However I’m not convinced he’s actually weeing as it’s only small (but very smelly!) patches and he’s still using the litter tray as normal. He’s eating normally but he is also a very sicky cat.

Added complication is that we have another cat (his sister) and I’ve never actually seen the perpetrator doing it but I’m as certain as I can be that it’s him.

So I’m trying to work out whether it is spray and if it is how can I stop him doing it. I’m really worried my house is starting to smell despite having cleaned up all the patches thoroughly with a specialist cleaner.

Try a Feliway, they seem to be good at reducing anxiety

Cat spray catches at your throat as it is so strong.

Has he had any other symptoms of something being wrong like yowling a lot?

The only times my male cats have went outside the tray is with a UTI and they pee very small amounts very frequently like humans with an infection.

You can buy a urine sampling kit and take it to the vet to be tested.

I'd get him checked asap, a UTI especially in a male cat can get really nasty quickly. Our cat sprays and wees when he has a UTI.

I think spray is usually on vertical surfaces as they back up to things to do it. Walls, cupboard doors etc. If it's pools on the floor then it's likely to be urine.

Thank you. I’ll get him down the vets tomorrow. We tried Feliway but it’s made no difference. We think he had a run in with a fox a couple of months ago and he’s not been right since, poor chap.

When they spray it is wee they emit. Spray is normally on vertical surfaces whereas wee would be on horizontal surfaces
