Indoor cat wants out!

My 6 year old kitty has been indoor her whole life, and has seemed fairly content at this until she was accidentally let out by a relative 6 months ago. She was outside for around 20 minutes and hid behind the wheelie bin by the front door which is where I found her. Ever since this time she meows incessantly at the back door day and night, pawing at it as if she’s desperate to get out. I thought ignoring her would help, but she has since managed to run between my legs to get outside for a few seconds which seems to have made her even more determined.
My thoughts are she is too old to now become an outside cat, she’s also tiny (3kg) and we live by a main road and with other big cats in the street. So safety wise it wouldn’t be a good idea.
Should I consider some kind of outside enclosure, or cat proof the garden with those mesh things that fix to the fence?
I hate that she seems so unhappy being stuck inside and have no idea what to do to help this.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

could you get an enclosure like this?

Might she come for a walk on a cat harness? Mine likes her evening constitutional. I think she would like to be free roaming, but we rescued her as an indoors cat. At 8 years old with no idea of what a car, a dog or a fox is, I fear she would be dead in a week

Six isn't old for a cat at all!
Moved from a flat to house and our 18 year old tabby started going out and loved it!

Snowdrop I feel the same. She wouldn’t have a clue what to do with any dangers, hence all the times she’s snuck out she just hides behind something an cries!

I know 6 isn’t old, but just feel that’s a long time to only be used to indoors.

She an unusual (ish!) breed and we have had dogs/cats go missing in our area that are pedigree and looks a bit different so that also worries me.

Sleep that is the kind of thing I was looking at, Omlet do some nice ones but ££ and want to make sure it will be worthwhile.

I’d cat proof the garden, probably more expensive but she’ll be happy.

If you're still thinking of what to do, have you considered getting an extra long dog lead and clipping it onto a harness? Then securing the lead in the garden where you can see her? We have a bike lock in our garden secured firmly which the lead handle is securely fastened. The lead is about 8m long and she can still run around the garden and watch the birds, but stays safe Smile

If you have someone handy with DIY type things, you should be able to build your own Catio for much less than buying one. You would have to make sure it has a roof of some kind and can't be dug under to escape from, but plain wood & decent chicken wire should be OK. Sadly my house is on a steep slope and the garden is terraced right down to the back door so it isn't really feasible for me, but I did look into it carefully.

Cosycableknit's idea is only suitable if you stay in the garden the whole time the cat is out. She could get terrorized/attacked by other cats while on a leash and would be unable to defend herself.

cosycableknit · 23/08/2019 15:22

@LetItGoToRuin I can see what you mean, but we've never had that problem, the other cats in the neighbourhood are fine with her. I suppose it depends what the cats are like in the area Smile
