3 of our cats have died after being treated with flea tablets

We gave our two beautiful BSH blue girls a flea tablet prescribed by the vet after their annual checkup and vaccination.

Two hours later, E died even though she had been given a clean bill of health from the vet. Vet said that she had died from heart failure or poisoning but couldn’t be sure without an expensive autopsy.

Two weeks later, A died. As she had been playing with a mouse shortly before she died, we assumed she’d been accidentally poisoned. The vet said that it was definitely not the flea tablet.

We bought the girls to keep as house cats but eventually let them outside. They both died before their third birthday.

We bought two BSH cream boys and have kept them as house cats. Last week, we again gave them both the same flea tablets as we have previously given the girls as prescribed by the vet as we are away on holiday. They do not go outdoors so we only flea them when they are going to the cattery when we go away.

M died within three hours of taking the tablet on Friday, 2nd August. His death was exactly the same as E’s. Sick, tongue hanging out of his mouth, pupils dilated and then he was dead.

The vet rang the pharmaceutical company who have offered to pay for an autopsy and cremation after being told that we have lost three fur babies after giving them tablets to prevent fleas. They paid for our remaining cat to be seen by the vet and given blood tests. We don’t have the results back yet.

The death of our beautiful boy has totally ruined our holiday and we are terrified that our remaining boy will die.

Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this after fleeing their fur babies? The vet recommended this brand as the BSH breed have such dense fur. So worried about our boy and gutted that we couldn’t keep our beautiful babies alive even though we took such great care of them.

All 3 died after taking the same tablet, after being given a clean bill of health from the vet and whilst so young. None of them reached anywhere near three years old.

The girls were sisters, the boys were brothers and both were bought from different breeders. Any thoughts or advice please

Really sorry to read about your loss. I'm dropping a message here as we've had a similar disaster with one of our cats.
Around the age of three, our female cat began having seizures. Taking her to the vet she given Epiphen to manage what the vet had diagnosed as a rare form of feline epilepsy. We accepted this diagnosis.
During the autumn and winter last year, I opted to not bother with giving our girl Bravecto. I began to notice that the frequency of seizures began declining.
I reduced her Epiphen accordingly, then stopped giving it to her. She seemed like a new cat, very happy and affectionate again. No seizures.
With spring coming along, we administered Bravecto somewhat hesitantly and our girl had seizures within 48 hours of the drug being administered.
It seemed fairly evident that it definitely was the treatment causing these very distressing episodes.
Recently, we changed vet. Mentioned the correlation between Bravecto and seizures. The vet suggested using Credelio instead. Unfortunately, this brought the return of seizures within 48hrs and on Sunday, our beautiful cat had had one final and fatal episode. We are heartbroken.
I thought that I'd post here, I can't warn people against a treatment that appears to be ok for a large number of pets, but I would strongly recommend bearing this story and that of the OP in mind. If you cat or dog starts to suddenly have fits/seizures, bear in mind when they were administered Flea and Tick treatment, and whether it correlates. You might save your pets life if you spot the connection.

So sorry to hear these stories and shocked that this potentially (or actual) lethal side effect is not mentioned by the vet, and also shocked that the vet didn't make a connection, instead leaving it to the owners to make the link
