I’ve got a biter!

We adopted a 6 month old kitten nearly two weeks ago. He is delightful - really affectionate, playful, and has been great with our older (and quite grumpy!) cat. However he is a biter - not playful biting, properly painful biting.

The charity we adopted him from said that his previous owner (who had him from 8 weeks) worked long shifts, so he was shut in a flat for hours on end himself, then often shut away when she got home. I know this is probably why he does it - and he’s never been taught not to before either.

We are experienced cat owners, and whilst previous cats have had the odd nibble, we’ve never had anything like this before (broken skin and bleeding). I have been giving him a brief ‘time-out’ in another room when he does it, using a firm voice to reprimand him, distracting with toys, and rewarding him for good behaviour. Any other suggestions?

He was not previously vaccinated, so we started them last week. He will eventually go outside so hopefully that will help.

So far he hasn’t bitten my 5 year old but I’m concerned that might happen.

A gentle spray with a water spray when he does it will discourage it as he will associate biting with getting wet which (most) cats don't like!

Has he been neutered?

NeedaDiscoNap · 07/08/2019 17:37

Thanks summerlove, he actually likes water would you believe?!

Yes he has been neutered fluffycloudland

No advice, but following, as after 18 months in our home our rescue cat is the same.

Where is he biting you? Is it during play or is it out of the blue when you walk past ?

Have you got a Feliway Plug-in?

I'd say 99% of the time cats are biters through boredom or stress.

Does he have a high safe space to go to?

NeedaDiscoNap · 07/08/2019 19:21

Thanks for the replies! He mainly bites during play, but is also an opportunistic biter on occasion too (if walking down the stairs etc.).

We have the feliway plug-ins, and he has a few high spaces he can go to. I honestly don’t think he’s stressed at all - he’s very settled, always on someone’s lap for cuddles, shows lots of affection to all of us in lots of different ways.

My previous cat was similar, but not to such an extent and really only when over stimulated.

Sounds like he wants to plaaaaaaay! And practice his big-cat-hunter-skills 😁🐯.

I suspect he'll settle down once he starts going out.
