How to stop kitten running up (and pulling down) curtains?!!

Both my bedroom and living room curtains have been pulled down, track and all, three times now!! I’m getting so annoyed, not to mention the curtains are getting ruined!!

12 weeks old, boy, v playful, gets lots of attention so I don’t think he is bored.

I'd keep them down until he's passed the annoying stage.

Blankspace4 · 05/08/2019 21:59

I’m really not sure I can cope with no curtains in my bedroom!!!

...and in your experience, how long is ‘the annoying stage’?!! Shock

Shut him out your room, we did it when DCat1 was wee. When she stopped causing chaos at night we let her back in. She cried at the door for a while but I needed sleep.

PannacottaLotta · 05/08/2019 22:02

Sorry OP, there isn't alway and end to the 'annoying phase'!

Sunandrainallconfusedhere · 05/08/2019 22:03

Get another dkitten.
And am not joking...

Blankspace4 · 05/08/2019 23:05

@Sunandrainallconfusedhere you mean as a companion? Or replace him? I can’t replace him!!

As a companion so they can play together. He sounds adorable. Can you post a photo of the little mischief maker?

luckyorange · 06/08/2019 07:01

Repeatedly saying no (for weeks and weeks). We tried spraying citrus smelling sprays on things and putting alternative climbing frames close to where there were being naughty. Altho I think some cats just won't be trained sorry!

We also found something the cat was scared off and put it in front of the furniture we wanted them to leave alone. It was a complete accident- we bought them this big mouse cat toy thinking she'd love it. For some reason she hated it - don't know why. So that kept her off the tv unit!

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/08/2019 07:22

They get too heavy for it eventually. I’d leave those up as sacrificial curtains then refit everything when he’s grown out of it.

As for the annoying phase mines never grown out of it.

Sunandrainallconfusedhere · 06/08/2019 09:02

2 dkittens will greatly reduce damage to your home ime!
You never replace pets.
Just add more!!

Sparklfairy · 06/08/2019 09:09

Mine used to do this. Her favourite were the net curtains in the kitchen. But she'd get tangled in them half way up, get stuck, panic, and fart dead things Envy not envy! god her farts were horrendous

Grew out of it eventually. She's 8 now and still really playful, just not annoying/destructive and sweet Jesus thank god the panic farts have stopped

AtillatheHun · 06/08/2019 09:11

You’ll look back on this phase fondly! They get too heavy for it eventually; make sure you film it for posterity and accept the curtains will be damaged...

GingerKittenHuman · 06/08/2019 09:13

Do you have a tall cat tree so the kitten can climb and scramble up high? That may help release some of that urge.

My kittens are 5 and a half months now and since they’ve been outside and can climb trees, their indoor time has calmed down massively.

Sparklfairy · 06/08/2019 09:33

When I was a child we had two sisters who both had kittens at the same time. 9 kittens playing under the kitchen table when you're getting ready for school is one thing. 9 kittens climbing up your legs while you're trying to eat breakfast and rush out the door is another. So many scratches and ruined tights/trousers! PP is right though, you'll miss this stage when it's over. I still have videos of current cat meeting our dog for the first time. Her winding in and out of his legs, him with his bum in the air chasing her Smile it was magical!

cranstonmanor · 06/08/2019 09:43

OMG! You broke the rules of mumsnet! Don't you know you cannot post about your pet without a photo of said pet!?!?

But in earnest, it's normal kitten behaviour. DH had two kittens who both climbed the curtains, so a companion isn't always tge cure. Although I do think that cats are happier with a companion for the long nights that we ignore him. I thought our cats didn't like each other till one died. Then I realised that although they argued sometimes they were good company for each other really.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 06/08/2019 11:53

Yeah, not sure about the two kittens = less destruction thing - that's not been my experience 🙈

I remember popping home for lunch from work one day and was accosted by my neighbour from across the road who told me my cats (they weren't kittens but still young) had greatly entertained her flying across the window on the curtains like Errol Flynn 😂

Mine are elderly girls now and occasionally still play hunt each other through the curtains - I've made my peace with not having pristine, click/hole-free soft furnishings, It's a small price to pay for the joy they bring - plus they're cheapo Ikea curtains Wink

OneThreadOnly0101 · 06/08/2019 11:59

Yeah... You have to get rid of the curtains... 😂

I'm 6 years in with my two and they're still annoying. I have one of those concertina blinds in my bedroom, they quickly learned they could push it up with their fat little heads. I always wake up blinded by sunlight. They also get inside all my kitchen cupboards, open all my drawers, put their heads in the bread bag and chew open any packet of cat food/treats that isn't locked out of sight. And sometimes they get poo trousers.

It's endless fun.
